In a previous post, I mentioned that I was getting re-acquainted with an American Deluxe HSS Strat from 2006. Which means of course that I've been re-visiting the S-1 switching system.

Just curious, can anyone tell me exactly what I'm listening to as I engage the S-1 on a strat of this model and vintage?

Part of what prompts the question is the strange, seemingly "missed opportunity" of position one, which appears to be redundant (full DH-1 and full DH-1). I mean, if you could have both a single coil and a humbucker in the bridge at will, wouldn't you want to? I'm also curious as to what the other positions offer with S-1 engaged. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Thanks! Yes, that's very helpful.

Still, I'm curious about position 5 (bridge pickup). Just curious why the S-1 system leaves that unchanged from the typical set up. Is there a straightforward electrical reason?

I don't believe there was electrical wiring reason; I suspect their rationale was to give the player the straight-up bridge humbucker option regardless of the S-1 setting.
