The black Strat with the 3 single coils was U2-inspired since "The Edge" used an all-black maple neck CBS Strat for years.

Is the "limited edition" just the colors or are there any other differences from the regular American Specials?

The white one has a pearly gates humbucker instead of the atomic.

I would have to change the pickup covers and knobs to parchment to give it the 76 look myself.

So the HSS limited edition Am Spl is essentially a Lonestar Strat...

Yeah sort of but its not wired with a super switch just a 5 way, also it has the Pearly Gates with Alnico 2 not the Pearly Gates Plus with Alnico 5 which gives it more kick.

The Pearly Gates Plus was a hotter version of the Pearly Gates. It was exclusively made for Fender.

Quote:
Mike Lewis, who was then head of Fender's guitar marketing (he's now running Gretsch) and I were the ones who worked out the pickups on that pickup. Mike had a background in retail sales knew what the Pearly Gates sounded like and he wanted that tone for this Strat. But, he wanted around 6dB of boost over and above a regular Pearly Gates for the bridge pickup. According to Mike, "When you go into the bridge position, I want a noticeable boost. And the Texas Specials are already on the hot side." So we took a stock Pearly Gates, changed the magnet from an Alnico 2 to an Alnico 5, and added a few hundred more turns. And voilà! The Pearly Gates Plus was born.

The Pearly Gates is rather different than the "Pearly Gates Plus" that is on various Fender instruments including the Lone Star Strat®, Fat Strat, Big Apple Strat and some Showmaster® guitars. The Pearly Gates Plus is only available on select Fender guitars or from Fender dealers. The main difference in these pickups is that a Pearly Gates has Alnico II magnets, while the Pearly Gates Plus has Alnico V magnets. Alnico V magnets tend to give a brighter, glassier tone, while Alnico II magnets tend to have a warmer, rounder, more mid-rangier tone. The closest pickup available in our regular line to a Pearly Gates Plus is a '59 Model with 4-conductor cable. The '59 is an Alnico V pickup with a wind very close to that of the Pearly Gates Plus. The '59 usually comes in single conductor cable, but it can be ordered with the 4-conductor wiring option.

By '77 Fender black guard and black parts was the way Strats came. It's a cool look that I replicated with a black '06 Hwy 1 Strat. I went as far to put in a set of CS '69 pickups. I eventually sold it for a blonde '76 Strat with black guard and white parts.

If these guitars came with at least the pro cases they would be more appealing. That makes one lean more towards the American Standards.

My only beef with the specials (I own one) is they are three piece bodies. Knowing what I know now, for the money I'd buy a standard.

I have decided to get an American Standard just for a lot of reasons but I think they are the better Strat. Just waiting on Tax Return now.

Most Fender Strats and Teles are 3 piece bodies. 2 piece bodies are a rear thing, and 1 piece bodies are almost never heard of.

I think the standards have nicer necks and tremolos not to mention a case. The body didn't have much to do with it for me.
