I love this guitar, bought her new in 2011 and since logged some serious hours on her and the frets were finally done, so I decided to put her on the bench and breath some new life into her. I also made a new Nut using unbleached Bone for a more vintage vibe instead of the stark White nut supplied as stock. I used Stew Mac #149 Wire, same dimension specs as the original "Medium Jumbos" installed from the factory, I also ran water thin Cyano under them, the tone difference this makes is quite amazing compared to dry fitting. She plays and sounds better than ever now, I feel this model Strat was one of the best off the shelf recipes Fender ever came up with, such a shame they discontinued this model.

Dusted the camera off and here's a few pics I snapped today after the final setup (why not?).

She's got some natural relicing going on now.

Thanks for looking. 8)

Outstanding polishing job on the new fretwire, Snowy!

That sir is one stunning Strat, and kudos on the fret job, I'd love to have the gear and kahunas to attempt it when I need to.

Nice work!! And nice guitar!
I just bought a used AVRI ´62 that i think might be the Hot Rod version.
Any thoughts of how to identify this guitar? year/model.
I don´t want to take of the neck to find the production year..

The serial number is: V168348.

The only way to date your guitar is to take the neck off and see what's stamped or written at the butt end of the neck.

Or contact Fender Consumer Relations and give them the serial number for details.

Thanks a lot folks, she certainly is a happy Strat.

Ejenss, there's a few things that differentiate the AV Hot Rod '62's from the AVRI model. The few that come to mind are, if it's a Hot Rod it will have 9.5 radius fretboard with Medium Jumbo frets (The AVRI has a 7.25 radius with smaller Vintage frets). The Bridge pickup on the Hot Rod has a tone control wired to it whereas the AVRI has no tone control on the Bridge pickup. The Hot Rod also has a reverse wound Middle pickup for some hum cancel when the pickups are switched to the Middle-Bridge and Neck-Middle combinations. The Hot Rod also has an unmistakeably large neck, it's one of the biggest I've encountered on any Strat I've played.

That's off the top of my head so I might have missed a couple of things. As far as dating the guitar you would have to contact Fender as others have advised, or pull the neck off. Mine is stamped with a month/2010 and the words "Hot Rod".

Thanks a lot for the help guys!
I just took the neck off -feeling really bad doing it, but it was no problem.
2007 -Hot Rod. So the "mystery" is solved! It feels like a ´51 Nocaster I owned some years ago. Maybe the neck radius is about the same.

Sorry for borrowing your thread Snowy. ;-)

That is an absolutely beautiful Strat and if the pictures are any indication you did a pro job with the nut and refret... neither of which are a trivial task!

You are also dead on regarding this model and how they discontinued them. I feel they flew under the radar while they were available and it's a shame they are no longer available. I was lucky enough to snag a pre-owned Oly White one in mint condition around 2010. I believe it's a 2007 model if my memory serves me correctly.

They also have lacquer finishes. The pickups sound fantastic and I think they may have used slightly higher graded tonewoods, but I have no proof of that. I've always had my eye out for another in 3TSB like yours, but finding them in person is like a diamond in the rough. Again... fantastic axe you have!

Thanks a lot divebomb, funny you should mention keeping an eye out for a 3TSB because I have often thought I would try to snap up an Olympic White version if one ever passed my way and how cool it would be to have them as a pair.

I think they did have a third colour in the lineup, "Sherwood Green", I'm pretty sure for some reason they stopped producing the Green ones earlier the model's lifespan leaving only the 3TSB and Olympic White. The Green did look nice as well.

Yes! I almost forgot about Sherwood Green. I hauled mine out last night after reading this thread. Snapped a picture today too. * High Five *
