In answer to the question in the thread title, no!

If you want a guitar that's looks distressed buy a new one with a nitro finish, then play it like you stole it, play it whenever you can, and do it every day.
Spend every possible waking moment playing it.
Play it but don't abuse it and throw it around.
Treat it with respect, but play it like you mean it!
The guitar will show the signs of your actions soon enough, and the signs it will show are because you put the time in; your playing will make it so.

Your playing will improve as a result, and your guitar will become a part of you and you it.
And it won't be fake like all the "relic" guitars out there.

And that's what 99% of the "relic" guitars out there look like - fake!

And I don't think I insulted anybody in posting my opinion, even though I have been insulted in the course of this thread.

Buy whatever takes your fancy, if it's a relic at least when you ding it yourself it won't seem so bad. I get the feeling you don't have many guitars? If so getting a brand spanking new one will seem like you have to mollycoddle it and any self inflicted ding may upset you a bit.

As for ebaysux, why all the vitriol aimed at him, you guys need to back off.

.. Al

Well, actually no it isn't. Your assumption is people have relics because they are some kind of wannabe posure.

My original sentence contained the part " some like the feel", which you chose to omit...

Well, one thing is certain. I, for one, will no longer remain silent when someone implies those who don't like relics and voice their opinions are inherently insecure, insulting or don't have a clue. I know there are many others who feel exactly the same even if they don't post it. It doesn't matter who started what or who said what. The fact remains the pro-relic crowd is just as possessed of the insecure, insulting and clueless and the anti-relic crowd. From this moment on there will be no more claiming to be the side that takes the high road. Not without a whole boatload of browbeating.

Apologies, I should have put - Your assumption is some people have relics because they are wannabe posures ... Perhaps some are, who knows?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I always thought the AV series was for people who like the look and feel (and specs/dimensions) of vintage instruments. Isn't it only the "relic" aspect of some instruments that is at question here and not the look and feel?

Just trying to clarify the real issue of the debate. If that is true, that it's just the "pretend" wear and tear, then I'm not sure I understand why the pro-relic crowd has an issue with people saying there's something fake and poseur about them. If you like the look of a battered instrument that's up to personal preference but I don't see how anyone can argue that aspect of them isn't fake. Am I missing something here?

I understand your argument but, by the same token, wouldn't covering a song then be considered a fake?

By creating a replica, or omage, or model, or reproduction, you aren't claiming it is real but it remains a thing in its own right. It is only a fake if you are trying to pass it off as the real thing.

I don't see those as being equal. When I play covers I'm not trying to appear to be the actual original artist. I'm not trying to look and sound just like Foreigner just because I play Hot Blooded or Double Vision. Even tribute bands who do exactly that still advertise well in advance of their shows that they are a tribute band. Nobody goes there and wonders if it's the actual band or not. As a patron at a gig there is nothing to distinguish a relic from a real vintage guitar unless the owner lets you examine it in your own hands and flip it over and see the Corona neck plate or the modern serial number. If you want to make that comparison then let's see all relic guitars have the work "Relic" in big bold letters inlayed into the fretboard.

But you are assuming they want you to think their relic is old and deceive you in doing so. Do people who hang a print of the Monna Lisa ( or any print) on their wall do so to make people think it is the original? Of course not, they just like the original and it's their way of appreciating it.

Why does it make any difference what someone's guitar looks like?

There is only one real Mona Lisa and everyone who knows about it also knows it hangs in the Louvre and that it is worth so very many millions of dollars that it is completely out of reach, even for the average rock star. There are thousands of vintage guitars and many people own them.

It doesn't make any difference to me what your guitar looks like but if it's intentionally got all the wear and tear of a real vintage you can't play innocent when someone suggests it's a fake. Just sayin'.

If you really don't understand a difference between a naturally reliced vintage guitar and a modern copy, explaining is impossible.

You might want to re-read the question and try again. I did not ask what the difference was between a relic and a copy. I asked for what story a relic can tell be it natural or artificial wear. Image

This comment makes no sense unless someone is trying to pass off a relic as an original. If no one can tell the difference does it really matter to anyone but the owner???? . I mean for example you can pay a retail store $4,000 for this Custom Shop heavy relic...

or spray paint a 30 dollar Squire with hardware store paint and scratch it yourself....right?
