The term "relic" has changed - language evolves, you know. Your definitions are soo last season.

The relics may be "only a f**king piece of wood" to you, but not to everyone. Some guitar finishes just make a bigger statement than others. Just read the the 11 pages on the topic...

On the artist/relic question I already answered; the "built in" vs "only if customer specified" above.

And on your SRV remark... Really, you need to try and exploit the giants to defend your opinions and livelihood..?

The meaning of the term relic has not changed, it is simply being used wrong. It is a marketing ploy and is misused. That said, I understand some people think a relic is just any guitar that was damaged with intent. It is not that simple and I know of no one outside the guitar world that uses the term relic this way or would agree the word has "evolved" due to Fenders marketing terms.

Why I need to explain what is so self evident is puzzling. I just don't care that much anymore and being I get maybe 2 requests a year if that to build a "relic" (which is actually a "replica" if we were not just re-defining/re-purposing words for a marketing ploy), it does not effect my livelihood enough to really be concerned with a handful of haters on forums who for no rational reason concern themselves so obsessively over what other people prefer their piece of wood to look like based on personal opinions, bias, preferences or image.

ANY further reply to me on this subject just refer back to this. I am done with this troll created non argument. And speaking of words that do have new definitions, "troll" is actually a good example. It means in short one who posts on forums with no real intent or value other then to sow discord towards other members and disrupt the forum.

EDIT: To add since it addresses the topic. A "reissue" is simply a loose "replica" of how Fenders were made in the 50s-70s. An "Artist series" is simply a loose "replica" of what certain guitarists play or used to play. A "relic" (if going by Fenders standard) is a "replica" of nitro finished Fenders built in the 50s and 60s but how many of them look after being used for decades instead of how they came out of the box new. Not that much of a distinction really as they are all simply "replicas" of older guitars and just gives the customers more choices and options to get what they want. If people did not want them then the market would decide and no one would build them to sell.

In short the term "relic" is being used for marketing to actually describe what is supposed to be a "replica" or reproduction of a relic be it lightly or heavily distressed/worn. That in itself does not redefine a word. We would not call a "62 reissue" a "1962 Stratocaster" unless we were intentionally trying to mislead. Granted with some relic replicas that are tediously detailed enough it is really not that easy to tell the difference other then Fender typically will have a Custom Shop decal on the back of the headstock and a serial number on the neck plate indicating what it is. And that kind of authenticating and documenting certainly adds a value to any reproduction granted it does not make it by default a "better" guitar then every replica not built by Fender in every case. And it goes without saying that someone who just sands down and throws keys at and burns the headstock of a modern Squier and then lists it for sale as a "relic" is certainly looking for a sucker or at least is quite ignorant even if they personally love the way it looks after the damage and think that alone compares to what Fender Custom Shop or other pro builders are selling as "heavy relics".

All those FACTS aside.... another thing to point out regarding some of these relic posts...

"I really do not like relics"= "Opinion". Totally acceptable.

"Relics are for dumb/stupid posers suckers etc and all it takes to build one is toss any perfectly good guitar down the stairs, drag it from the car for miles or leave it outside for months etc"= "Personal attack", blanket generalization, argument from ignorance, and is totally unacceptable.
