Along the "reclaimed" line... several years ago, when I was down in Georgia visiting my brothers, I happened to check out the local C/L on the morning before my flight out. There was a local good ol' boy picker-builder who was advertising some of his creations which looked really interesting: Ho-made Esquires using '80's/'90's MIJ Squier necks and parts with bodies made from heart pine culled from a 100+ year old barn on a neighbor's property. Natural finishes, of course-the wood looked beautiful.
If I had only been in town another couple of days...

You can't beat a good ruck to generate hits on a thread. I like it when people are passionate about a subject but I do think there are some who take up a contra view just to be argumentative.

Fender certainly seem to be all in to relics, if the NAM show stand is anything to go by, so they obviously sell a great many or they wouldn't pursue the style.

I ran across this unique Strat on Facebook...

...seems to be a Rosewood neck (see headstock)...

...the body is beautiful...kind of like the sandblasted Strats with a torched finish!

Rosewood necks seem to be the thing for 2015. I don't like them myself. I like the finish on the body of the above guitar but not the three butted slabs of timber so much.

I think it is a good looking guitar body and unique but could be better (the burn marks seem a bit splotchy). I have nothing against rosewood necks per se however I think on that particular guitar it would work better if the headstock was closer in finish to the body. The rosewood fretboard does seem to work especially with the black PG, in my opinion of course. So essentially I would have went with a maple neck, rosewood board and performed a similar treatment on the headstock and perhaps the back of the neck as well.

I don't necessarily have an issue with the neck finish/aging being different to the body. In the fantasy world of relics the neck and body don't have to have been from the same guitar originally, and may have been swapped. It's just the rosewood headstock looks wrong (as would the back of the neck on a Strat). I have just about come to terms with painted head stocks (though I don't really like them); but Rosewood!!!

Well I would not consider that particular strat a "relic", but more of a custom. With customs anything goes really and of course people have different tastes. I like the style of it overall but would change a few things as stated that better suit my tastes. As far as the all rosewood neck to me that would work better on a black body or something dark brown like a walnut or dark stained mahogany etc.

Just doesn't seem right to lower the price on a guitar because of a few legitimate dings yet raise the price on one that looks like it's been dragged behind a car for a few miles. No relic for me.

I do like my Roadhouse Strat though. The maple neck is aged to a golden yellow and the knobs and pickups are aged white. No dings, scratches, or scuff marks - just looks like it has been hanging out in a smoky bar for a few decades. If I do accidently ding it up a bit, I'm pretty sure its value will go down and beating the heck out of it won't bring it back up.

My first thoughts went the other way - no scratchplate and pickups mounted directly to the body!

No. I know they have professionals do the relicing and there is an art to it. Just doesn't appeal to me other than the fact that if I accidently scratch it up the dings will just blend into the rest and be forgotten. I do like the Tex-Mex pickups they put in the Roadworn Series though.

That will suffice, no harm in that. I like the Tex- Mex pups too. :D

Came down to the reliced Roadworn with Tex-Mex or the aged Roadhouse with Texas Specials. Went with the Roadhouse but do want to get something Tex- Mex. Maybe Nashville Deluxe Tele though.
