The tele is nice but as far is which looks better is such a subjective thing and that Strat is much more interesting (at least to me) then an off the shelf modern tele. Now granted you also got a killer deal on that tele which it seems to have been a USA version do ask over or around 1000 that certainly helped the trade on your end. However if just going by dollar value, you will not find too many 75 Strats for under 1500...and typically are asking upwards of 2000.

Without being 100% positive I would at least assume it being that odd mocha version adds even more value, I have seen them before, but not very often. Blonde teles??? A dime a dozen.

That's exactly WHY I did the trade. I know if I just had to have a Blonde 60th, I could find one easily and not for $500 again, but i'd be hard pressed to find another '75 Mocha for a deal like this. Real happy I did the deal. I've never REALLY been a Tele guy , so that helped the decision. :)

I absolutely love both teles and strats... but I get so much more versatility from the Strats that I will always favor them. As far as the 70s model strats they get mixed reviews. From my personal experience owning at least a dozen over the years, they were all great. As with anything setup is critical but so is your personal style and taste and feel etc. I have many regrets in life but some big ones were selling off some of those 70s strats. To me they are just solid body guitar perfection on so many levels and the fact that the older ones all seem so unique and have a kind of a "personality" just adds to the joy of owning and playing them.

I've got a '79 Antigua which was my 1st real guitar my dad bought me. I STILL have it. It's has a HUGE Louisville slugger baseball bat neck. I've tried A LOT of other 70's Strats for sale in guitar shops, and most all had huge necks and were very heavy

This '75 has a WAY more slender neck than my '79 and is way lighter. These also were the other reasons I wanted to do the trade.

Since you're in to relics, have you EVER done Antigua "relic". Here's some pics of my '79 in all it's bruised and scared glory.

I typically only do relics as per request and I have not had anyone ask for an Antiqua yet. It would be interesting to try that type of burst. I do on occasion build a custom just to see how it sells in a test market. I think with something like that rather then a relic would perhaps consider creating replica based on a classic 70s... however it would not really be worth it for the time involved if I could not profit at least 200 for the time. But if I come across a neck and body or a classic 70s really cheap that needs work it could certainly be something I would be willing to attempt.

I have heard that some of those late 70s had massive necks. The 70s I have owned were all 72-75 so I am not familiar with the baseball bat necks.

I would definitely get one if money was not an issue.

I like that Antigua natural relic look, it's snazzy. :D

I also like this '14 Limited Edition sandblasted body:

Those sandblasteds are pretty cool. I had never heard of those before. I found these pics on a NAMM site..

It says they make them like this.... "After the transparent finish (in beautiful Sapphire Blue or Crimson Red) is applied, the ash body is literally sandblasted, leaving the surface grain pattern wonderfully textured with parallel ruts and grooves in which the black grain-filler coat shows beneath the color finish coat."

Wish I had thought if that first lol.

I also really like the reclaimed wood Fenders.....

I got a buddy who is a high end home builder and contractor collecting leftover exotic and old woods for me so we can experiment making bodies. I know we can get the look down and come up with some really unique stuff but I also want to make sure they are not too heavy or worse yet do not sound right.

I am particularly inspired by the Paoletti wine series guitars (which are made from reclaimed wood from very old wine barrels). Not so sure I like the studs but everything else about them I really love. I am hoping to be able to build a few Strats and Teles in a similar vein but be able to charge at least half of what they do and still somehow make a profit lol..

Supposedly to make these he just stains them and then applies a light coat of clear nitro. I also really dig the bullet casing knobs.

Not so., I'm afraid, How about the humble Squier 51?..........These were selling at one point for $99 , now if one turns up on Ebay, they can go for over £250+ ($375)

To answer the OP question, I would never buy a relic (original....maybe ..."man made"...never) . Judging by the reaction of the relic "like" versus "dislike" voiced on here alone, I tend to think more people would seek out a 25 year old guitar in brilliant nick , rather than an artificial one in the future ( I just have a funny thought about someone in the distant future saying "Artificial relicking...what was THAT all about, I mean ..really!")

Ebay says these Squires go for around 150 usd. They turn up on ebay pretty regular.

The older Squires have been going up in value along with all the older MIJ's. Even the 51's.... look on ebay, there is not a single older one going for under $300. However if you are going to do an artificial relic those are not the platform to use unless you are just doing it because you like it to keep for yourself. The older Squires and MIJ's are worth more in as good condition as possible.

Actually the point to any "artificial" relic is not for resale purposes but because you personally want that image or look. That said there is a business in relic parts and building them but if the only purpose was for an investment then you want an actual older guitar..... which are of course going to be worth more in as good condition as possible, but still worth more unrestored.

I've heard of guitar bodies make of many materials, not only different types of wood, even plywood. I think the wood should sound fine. You might have more trouble finding a piece large enough

The Paoletti's look cool, but I agree, they could be improved on.

Finding large enough pieces is always a problem. That is why we typically make them out of 2 or 3. As far as the necks I am far from a neck builder so most likely I will just use stain on a pre made... either Fender or Warmoth depending on what I can get a better deal on.

The sand-blasted look is cool, though I don't care for the colors offered, a blonde would be really cool, I could go for that. 8)

How much are you willing to pay? 8)

But kidding aside we have been doing some experimenting. My "theory" is to try one using the black filler and natural wood, clear coated. If it comes out looking as good as I "theorize" I will post the pics. However Fender is using ash bodies for a reason (the grain). I am trying this on an alder body since that is all I have laying around to experiment on.

The Blonde would be nice, or even a 3 Tone Sun Burst! :D

What really gets me is the pattern on the curves, Boy Howdy.

The Alder ought to be interesting, tighter grain, more pattern.

I really like the Redwood Neck look, which wouldn't be too hard to emulate.
