Have to agree with Stratele52 with this one. Buy the guitar because it feels right, plays well, and has a tone you like. These are not investments, they are tools used to make music. Buy it and take good care of it and it might go up or it might go down in value, no way to tell the future, especially with a guitar that is mass produced.

Ditto the above comments.

Who cares if it goes up or down in 10 years? If you are buying the guitar to enjoy, use and keep (potentialy for the rest of your life) it's possible future value is completely irrelevant.

If you are trying to make an investment ask a financial advisor. My hunch is you would be better buying a real vintage Strat if this is the case. A guitar built in 2014 is only ever going to be worth as much as a 2014 model guitar, reliced or not.

I would point out that only an American made Fender is going to either hold it's value or go up in value, which would be many years from now anyway. And no guarantee that any guitar will increase in value, no matter where made.

Yes, I can see a new American made Strat being worth as much as or more than the price paid when new, in some 25 to 30 years.

A vintage guitar *might* qualify as an investment but only in so much as the market for such commodities appreciated during your term of ownership.

A new guitar is simply just another consumer product like a toaster oven, a snow blower, or a family sedan, where there is absolutely no hope of ever breaking even when it's time to broom it off at a yard sale.

If you're seeking appreciation of equity, look elsewhere.

Not so., I'm afraid, How about the humble Squier 51?..........These were selling at one point for $99 , now if one turns up on Ebay, they can go for over £250+ ($375)

To answer the OP question, I would never buy a relic (original....maybe ..."man made"...never) . Judging by the reaction of the relic "like" versus "dislike" voiced on here alone, I tend to think more people would seek out a 25 year old guitar in brilliant nick , rather than an artificial one in the future ( I just have a funny thought about someone in the distant future saying "Artificial relicking...what was THAT all about, I mean ..really!")

As mentioned, buy the guitar that plays and looks how you like it. Don't worry about the back end.

$1k-$2k is hardly an investment. Unless you're buying the next Microsoft @ $0.25, such an investment would only yield a few hundred $$ in 10 years anyway.

Back when I was on the Daily Treadmill, my suits cost that much, and they all ended up in the Goodwill pile.

Relics are currently a Fad. Artificially simulated wear that you pay a premium for. So they're gonna cost you more at the outset just for the 'Look'. It this fad going to continue? No one can say, but probably not IMO.

If they fall from favor, the Market is going to be awash with them, depressing prices.

My advice is to forget the Relic craze. Spend the difference on getting a better guitar that feels/play even better.

If you keep it for 10 years, it's gonna be a Relic anyway...

cheers!

Really? The early Japanese guitars from 85 on up, routinely sell for more than they cost new. I know I own a couple from new. The Japanese products from the mid 80s at the time were looked down upon and where dirt cheap on the used market, not so much anymore!

American Standard Strats from the 90's on up can certainly be had for less than their cost when new. Country of origin has no play whatsoever in whether a guitar will go up or down in value.

Sorry Shimmy but that was a load of hooey.

If I'm/we're still around in 30 years, let's revisit this topic and see.

Anyone have a link to one of these "valuable" Squiers?

I rather like the relic look. Another red Strat is another red Strat but a relic has a more organic, interesting look.

Well done the marks should tell a story, agreed a made up story, and the quality of the relicing (that can't be a real word) is in how well that story is told.

The guitar will tell the same story in 10 or 20 years time, with some further history added probably. However, if you were buying a 20 year old guitar and could buy a spotless example, or a faked relic, you would go for the former.

There is another possibility with reliced guitars...They don't get treated as gently as shiny guitars. They are already bashed so long suffering guitar players partner isn't going to worry too much about it while doing the cleaning. This being the case a 20 year old relic is more likely to have damage above and beyond that original bestowed upon it than a shiny guitar.

I bought a 1954 CS Relic, not for the future value. I bought it because of the look and feel of the guitar. The guitar sounds perfect and I do not know if I paid the correct price (guitars arent listed). Only time will know that, and for money that is worth now 1-3k, How much can we earn in in a 10/20 years period excluding CPI?

I do not think guitars are the best product to put my wealth.....

Shimmilou...I don't know about you, but in 30 years I'll be in my 80's and will consider myself lucky if I can remember how to play a guitar let alone remember to check the price listing for early MIJ and MIA guitars.

I hope that you not only remember how, but are also physically able. 8)

Well, the subject of this thread is a relic, not about other guitars. I should have been clear that I was also referring to a relic. In what countries are relics made? The American made could go up in value, not so much for the Mexican made.
