I recently went to a big chain music store and I noticed that the necks on the new Telecasters and Stratocasters feel different to me. Has Fender changed the neck shapes in any way? They feel slimmer to me.

I don't know if that's actually possible... Fender already has about 1,187 different variations in neck profile already... I bet they just revisited an older profile to mess with our minds...

Most prob still "Modern C" profile being used on new models (also referred to as the "Contemporary C"... again... to mess with our minds... two terms for the same thing... Damn, we need Brad to come in and clear this up... Is "Contemporary C" and "Modern C" the same profile?.. HELP!).

Anyways... far as I'm aware... They are Modern C (or... Contemporary C Mwuhahhahahhahhahha  ) unless specifically noted as otherwise....

And now... back to our regularly scheduled program.....

Paris...go play 50 more Strats and Teles and report back! You could be onto something...it sure seems that very few like big necks (V shapes the exception).

The modern C is not a thin neck. It's pretty medium size and is actually a little larger at the first fret than my LP which has a '50's neck carve. It may be because it doesn't have large shoulders that it feels a bit smaller than it measures at the center.

I owned a 2004 50th Anniversary Strat, which uses the modern "C" shaped neck, and really loved the feel of this neck. I don't get into music stores too often; purhaps I just grabbed a guitar with a different style neck.

Neck shape plays a very big part in my choice of guitar. For years, the soft "V" of my Clapton Strat was "it" for me.

Currently, I'm playing a '75 Strat with a pretty small neck. I don't have particularly large hands and like to wrap my thumb over the top of the neck, so I've always liked neck which are round and slim. The most comfortable neck for me is a very round and slim '79 Strat neck, as well the necks of '75s era ES335s.

I've never really liked the necks of the '90s - 2000s Les Pauls and ES335s. I will say that my '76 Strat has a very large round neck that had the neck radius flattened to "12.

It is definitely personal preference, and one should choose based on what allows them to play their best and easiest.

I can't play LP's with the chunky 50's neck.
I have a med-large hand, but have short fingers. I called it more of a "paw". :)

My '92 Strat Plus Dlx has an excellent neck for my hands, love it.
I can't get my thumb over the top of the fret board, as I said short fingers, but overall it's great for me.

My current favorite neck is my new Gibson ES335 satin cherry.
LOVE love that neck. It's a 60's "slim taper" and feels even better than the 60's LP neck.
This ES335 neck is so nice that I do play better and cleaner. It's close to my Strat but feels even nicer for me.
My Schecter C1 Classic has a wider fret board than the Strat or ES335, but it's also thin on the back curve, and that one feels very good to my hands as well.
All 3 are a bit different and require slight position adjustments, and that's why there are so many different neck shapes and sizes within and between brands so they can appeal to the various players out there.
I can't own a Les Paul simply because I had how it feels when I play it. It's like I'm fighting with the darn thing and access to the frets above the 12th is awful even on the thinner 60's neck.
Beautiful guitars those LP's and great tones, but not for me. :)
