bought a 1979 hardtail Strat for $119.99 four years ago. it was pretty much bone stock but 1 of the tone pots was broken off flush with the pickguard. you can see '79 on the PICS OF YOUR STRAT posting. it's on page 63 or so. back in 2000 I paid $69.99 for a 1980 Strat some one had stripped and BRUSHED on varnish. sold it to a pawn shop 3 weeks later for $350. I don't sell 'em now just stack em up like cordwood.

yeah...it's a great deal and it gets even better! I actually didn't pay $300 for it...I gave him $250 and he said that was fine. I have the serial now...it's E453000 I'll have pics to follow as soon as I get it all cleaned up and restrung. :D

Based on that serial I get:

Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton or Corona Plant (Fender), USA
in the Year(s): 1984 - 1988

Now I want to see the pics but dammit I cant from work. Great find.
Yes good deal another way to round that date down is how many frets it has if it is 1984, 1985 it should be 21 frets if its 1986 to 1988 it will have 22 frets 1983 to 1985 were CBS years either way is worth 750

Leo actually sold his companies to CBS in early 1965 for 13 million and CBS owned Fender till 1985. In 1985, CBS Musical Instruments division president William Schultz of the the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company and the employees purchased the company from CBS and renamed it the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation.

An older guitar is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Some folks think all the CBS guitars and amps were garbage but that's a bunch of crap. They didn't stay in business from 1965 to 85 by selling nothing but garbage. The mid to late 70's were pretty bad and a lot of the 80's guitars were boat anchors. Weight was associated with sustain.

Sorry about the rant. The important thing is not when or where it was made, but whether you like it or not. Sounds like you got a great deal. Congrats.

The 60's Strats used neck shim and the 70's the three bolt tilt neck. His sounds to be one of the later ones after the Smith year Strats. The last of the CBS years And you are right they were not junk. The 60's CBS are big dollars and the 70's are up there but not after 80.

I agree. The whole 3 bolt neck stuff is bull too. I never had any tuning or neck stability problems. I'm not saying all mid/late 70's guitars had problems. The quality control went down hill back then. But they still had some sweet guitars. Fender and Gibson were getting into deep trouble.
If it wasn't for William Schultz there may not be Fender guitars today.

Here's an example, my brother also plays and bought a Tele Thinline at that time. The bridge was off so bad it was nuts. He had to bring it back. He played a few others and found a great one. It was the time period. Gibson had some problems too. I have a 72 Strat that I've had since it was new and it still is one of the best guitars I've ever owned.

We've all handled both very good and very bad instruments from that 70s-80s period. It is really the awful inconsistency that got Fender such a bad reputation. Here's a juicy quote from The Fender Book:

Quote:
[Says Dan Smith, production manager] "I don't really think the [US] factory was running the way we needed it to until probably the first of '84". Dan Smith and his colleagues at Fender US received samples of the Japanese-made Vintage reissues before US production started, and he remembers his team's reaction to the high quality of these oriental Fender re-creations. "Everybody came up to inspect them and the guys almost cried, because the Japanese product was so good - it was what we were having a hell of a time trying to do."
Unquote.

Well, at least it ain't like that anymore. No crying, these days...

just checked...she has 22 frets. Plays like butter now that the new strings have been broken in...love the tone with the neck and middle pups. I also noticed something different when I took it apart for cleaning...I didn't remove the neck to check for the dates on the heel but what's funny is and I guess this is standard for older strats. The mounting screws for the tremolo were mounted directly into the body(like giant screws) without the threaded posts I normally see with newer Fenders or other manufacturers.

On my 72, I have no spring on my wiggle stick. Never had one. You either tighten it or leave it flop.

That point is right on: Fender would have gone out of business back then if they were as bad as the myth has it.

Strats had quality issues from day one (mostly the plastics and finish problems), but they were always professional level instruments (as professionals from over 50 years have proven). I've never had any trouble with my '70s strats.
