I went to adjust the truss rod on my AVRS 56' the other day and with the very thin nitro finish a small chip came off the neck pocket. I made a small adjustment and put the neck back on, still too much bow, I thought there has to be an easier way as I did not want to keep removing the neck and possibly further damage the finish. I began searching the computer.Image

I found what I had been missing, Cruz tools makes vintage truss rod tools, a regular for when you do remove the neck, and the cheater that works without removing neck, strings, or pickgaurd!Image

These are not just long screwdrivers, the tips are shaped perfectly to fit in the exposed slot, and move it effortlessly.Image

Thanks! Hate to disturb anything on my guitar if not necessary. Even when I find a prospective used guitar for purchase in an add, I pass if the seller has multiple pictures of the guitar taken completely apart. Question their ability.

I never remove the neck , just loossen the four screws a bit and turn the truss rod , tighten the four screw.

Many time I coud use a very slim screw driver like you do on the last photo if truss rod is not to tight

The beauty of this cheater is you don't need to loosen neck screws, remove strings or pickgaurd, the tip is shaped to slip perfectly into the exposed slot, and with the long shaft turns smooth and easy.

This may not work on all guitars because clearance may not be same . Your picture show guitar with lot of clearance , you are lucky .

My screw driver bit are smaller than yours and sometime I can't turn the truss rod nut , not enough clearance.

This is true, I just looked at my 50th 54' strat and it may be a bit harder to get to, the truss nut is set lower. It was perfect for my 56' so I guess you would have to try on an individual basis, certainly worth the $12.00 IMO.

I had to update, this cheater is even better than I thought, I just adjusted my 50th 54' truss rod, even with very little slot exposed the cheater worked great(and thats without removing strings, pickgaurd or neck!)

I have had great luck using a paint can lid removal tool. These are free at local hardware stores in my area. They are straight with the edge bent perpendicular to the body of the tool. This allows them to fit in the very narrow slots in the pick guard.

Good to know about the cheater tool, looks like a great help for those of us with vintage style truss rods!

There has to be something else. I saw a video once where they used a tool without to do anything to the neck before. One could fiddle it into the screw-pocket.

I had this topic already in a german forum and i search hard for that vid but i cant find it anymore... I know it sounds hard to believe because the room there is so tiny but it was like that. He fiddled it in somehow and was able to turn freely. There was a curved thing at the end where the "screwdriver" was attached. But the half of a cross screwdriver, not sure how you call that. Too hard to explain for me in english exactly, sorry. I have it my mind though.

I remember one of the 2 guys in there (they showed how to adjust truss rods) sayd something like "Good that these days we have this tool here, before one had to remove the neck to do this". Kinde like that. And then he just inserted that thingy and went away adjusting.

At that time i did not have a Vintage style fretboard so i never saved the vid or cared longer. But now ...
