I was given several sets of stainless steel strings as a gift. I was wondering if there are any pros/cons to putting these on my Strat vs. nickle wound strings.

The only minor thing to consider is fret wear. Nickel is a bit softer.

But really, the rest comes down to your preference of sound and feel of the two metals.
I'm not aware of any major impactful pros or cons one way or the other.

Gift strings are as good as cash 8)

Thanks for the feedback. I will probably put the SS strings on at the next change...especially since they were free.

I would like to hear some feedback about these strings. I can only imagine that they would sound very bright compared to regular strings. :?:

Pro: You would then know what they sound and feel like.
If it turns out badly, come back and tell us why.

You never know, you might prefer them. I used to like flat-wound strings on electric guitars. Now I prefer round-wound.

I would add saddle trench or wear if you bend a little while playing, depending on the type of saddles. Stock nickel saddles or any made of softer than SS strings will wear faster. I like the sound of SS, fwiw...

Of course, no problem if you have stainless steel frets... but you would have to custom build to get SS frets.

I've tried them. I sometimes run Fender 350's on my Tele. You'll find they have just a touch more sizzle on top, the lows are just a smidgeon more defined and they seem to spank a little more under aggressive pick attack. Other that that they're pretty much the same as nickel. I would rather run them than the nickel plated steel strings so common these days.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
