Nobody who buys these guitars has a proper idea of what to look for, so ignorance is largely to blame.

This is exactly why I did my videos about identifying 1970s era Strats. I want buyers to go armed with as much information as possible before they buy.

When I buy used I collect all information possible before the purchase. When I see the instrument live, I must know exactly what to check, outside and inside. With a 10€ multimeter and a jack you can also read pickups output without taking off the pick guard, and compare it with the spec of the model.
The net is full of reliable information!!!

Looks just like a Chinese fake someone I know, knowingly purchased.

So, on the plus side, you like the guitar.

It is certainly something of an old rogue, which inevitably makes it a bit appealing, and could probably tell a few tales.

Unfortunately it is worth next to nothing and even parts would be pretty difficult to sell as you have no idea as to their provenance.

Again, trying to spread some light, it could be a good starting point for your own Partscaster

Perhaps sand off the logo on the headstock and replace it with "Sparrowcaster" after Jack Sparrow? Certainly a happier connotation than "Tatocaster" which is another option.
