I have a '99 Clapton Strat and I'd like to replace the vintage tuners with locking tuners. Does anyone know of a direct replacement? The Fender locking tuners state that they won't fit the American Vintage Series which has the same vintage tuners as mine. Thanks!!

You'll need to drill some extra holes in order to install modern lockers properly. Not recommended, you might hurt the value of your axe.

Try those:

These tuners keep the vintage look while using modern locking tuner technology. No need to swap out and ruin the vintage look of your guitar.

I did just what you're asking a couple of months ago.

I did a build with an '02 Clapton neck and swapped the Gotoh locking/staggered tuners from my last build and slid the Clapton tuners into the old (Jimmy Vaughan) neck.

Fit in the Clapton neck like a hand in glove. The JV neck needed a little reaming of the post holes first time.

The new ones are Gotoh SDS510 H.A.P-M in Nickel - Gotoh info page ordered from JAParts who are great to work with.

Best pics I have are from the last build:

Truly appreciate the pics! Nothing beats a drop-in (or nearly drop-in) replacement. Thank you!

You're welcome, they're pricey but worth it. The locking mechanism takes a little getting used to, but it's no biggie. :D

They come with bushings for use in the larger, modern post holes as well.

Quick pic of the Clapton neck w/Gotoh's:

Plus with the groove on the top, they look a little like the vintage tuners. That's a nice mod, I bet a lot of non purists would like to know about.

I had to do a double-take when I saw the slots!
Very cool touch on Gotoh's part.

Those slots also adjust the diameter of the locking mechanism to your string size then tune a 1/2 turn (or less) to tighten.

Then they loosen the hold when changing strings. Velly Clever!

Makes one wonder how we managed to get by 55 years ago.

Bearing in mind Eric's current personal guitars are equipped with staggered tuners since a couple of years, so I bet these Gotoh vintage lockers are the same tuners Clapton actually uses in his axe nowadays.

Ah, the truth emerges. 1-800-gotoh, operators are standing by. Descretion assured!

I wouldn't expect FMIC to install these on the Artist Series guitars, but it sure would be appropriate for the Custom Shop Signature Series. It's also time for them to take the TBX out that guitar as well, and not reserve it solely for the Masterbuilt version. They certainly did not waste time putting the VN pickups in all the guitars years ago. Circuitry is not a hallmark of the Custom Shop[Teambuilt] and Masterbuilt program. Craftsmanship is. That's what you pay for.

The first batch of Teambuilt EC Customs produced between 2004 and 2008 do have a 250K pot. Clapton specified a return of the TBX for the Teambuilts in 2009.

So what you did expect from the Teambuilt EC Customs is a throwback to the pre-2009 specs to match those found on the artist's personal guitar.

Pree-cise-leeee.....and you remember the dustup we had about that when 'ufboy' was in the process of ordering a Custom Shop model, and the specs on the website did not agree with what they were telling him in Corona.

I have always been an advocate of this guitar living up to the original concept and marketing that this guitar was identical to what Eric uses on stage. Hence, what ever changes he made to his personal guitars should have been reflected in the Fender models. To date, only the pickups have been brought forward. As previously noted, let the Artist Series guitar lose only the TBX. For all the Custom Shop models, I would lose the TBX, and his signature, install the staggered tuners, and use an embossed signature neck plate with the guitar's serial number in lieu of the decal on the headstock. But what the hell do I know!?!?!?1
