I had a quick browse with the search and couldn't find this question anywhere else, so here it is.

I've got a Squier Jagmaster and have a Fender Strat coming and I've been thinking about putting flatwound strings on one or both to get my perfect surf sound.
From what I understand, flats have greater tension and the the floating bridges on strats (the jagmaster has a strat bridge as well) have a tendency to be pulled up by the tension throwing the guitar out of tune. Although I've never had the pleasure of owning a Fender with a roller bridge, apparently they don't have this problem.
Has anyone tried this on their strat?
Is there a particular type of flatwound string or gauge you recommend?

Thanks for looking!

Hello Tommorrowstars,

I sometimes use flatwound 12's
on my Am dlx ash Strat
But it's not near a surf sound,
vintage jazz comes to mind.

Cheers.

50 years ago......on my '58, I was using flat wound strings. This guitar was only on the market about four years and we 16 year-olds then really didn't know anywhere near what contributors on this website know these days. We played flats because we felt they were easier on the fingers, and we were playing Berry, and Holly and the like of those days....vintage rock.

My preference are round wounds and I expect that our sound would have been brighter and harder had we used them The choice is yours and I have not doubt that this post will bring the cheering sections for favorites out of the woodwork.

I have used flatwound 11's in the past and I love the sound. clean is very warm & jazzy. I normally use all 5 springs and had to make adjustments to the claw screws because of the added string tension you spoke of. but It was a minor adjustment and the guitar plays and sounds great.

i use pure nickel flatwounds and they are the most vintage warm bluesy and woody sounding strings ive ever heard, and they cost a ton and last forever.

If I wanted that surf tone I would find out what Dick Dale uses and go from there.
