This was on NPR this morning. I thought I'd share it with the Fender Strat forum:

The Stratocaster survives because Leo Fender was a fricking genius and he got the Strat perfect right from the git go!

All questions of tone aside...the classic shape of a Stratocaster has got to be the single most un-speakably cool 3 dimensional shape ever to spring from the mind of man.

The guitar won a 20th Century industrial design award several years ago.

What bugs me about some of these reviews is that everything has to smell of a marketing ploy. They just HAD to picture Mayer's guitar, of all the possible players who have made their mark with a Stratocaster. Seems to me that, for the sake of the piece, they could have pictured the current 60th Anniversary '54 along with a photo of Buddy Holly who, IMHO, was the first serious unsolicited artist endorser, and the reason why, over 50 years ago, that guitar came into our band. But what the hell do I know!?!?!?

You know quite a lot and hit the nail on the head!

Thanks for the cudos, bro. You realize, of course, that hitting one's thumb messes up one's
playing for a time.

It survives because it is simply the most versatile guitar ever made.

A strat is a classic 50's guitar that can be used for most any style of guitar music you choose. It can be played stock or modded. You can have singles and humbuckers as you wish.

It's a thing of beauty, classic yet futuristic. Advanced yet old school. It produces light and shade.

And please note that the Fender Stratocaster remains more or less the same good old guitar through the years, with just minor improvements. When people think of an electric guitar, the shape that comes to their mind in the first place is often the strat.

One thing that really amazes me is how such a contoured, cut away, bolt neck guitar was designed back in the 50s.

Leo and Tavares: geniuses.

I think a good measure of Leo's genius comes from his constant desire for feedback from musicians using his instruments and his willingness to change the design to meet their needs.

Strats have mojo all of their own.

A Stratocaster is loaded with the past, it holds our attention in the present, and it holds the future in the right hands. Like magic, it's a mixed bag of wonders.

Hmmm... let's see...
(in no reasonable order)

*Stays in tune
*Distinctive sound across a broad spectrum of styles
*Comfortable
*Models available for every budget
*Neck variations available for every hand
*Nice curves
*Parts and mods to make it as individual as YOU are
*Easy set-ups and adjustments
*Grab 'n' go-play dependability

Why mess with perfection? 8)

If they still made cars like this, we'd still be doing our maintenance with 20 bucks and a couple wrenches.
