Have a question! Dear professional forum members! :!:
I've got a vintage Eric Clapton Strat Signature series with Lace Sensors pick ups.By the serial number on the headstock its written that it was made in 1989 but on the body the date of production is 1992. I am sure that the guitar is fully original ,except saddles that i changed some time ago. But i really want to know why is it so?
Really appreciate your help!

Your pic album doesn't show.
And, the US instruments product dating page (this page down right > support > product dating > US instruments) seems to be down...

Is it just me & my PC, or do the above apply to others, too?

As always you can't really date a Fender guitar by the serial number because there are a lot of known anomalies. This is one of them.

Fender used the "SE9 xxxxx" serial number decals on Artist model guitars for several years - roughly 1989 through at least the early part of 1994. Some time in either 1994 or 1995 the artist models "caught up" to the normal Fender serial number system.

About the only time Fender was close to "on track" with the calendar year (i.e. changing over the serial number decals in January of a given year) was 1996-2009. And now because they used 2 different serial number formats in 2010 the "changeover" seems to happen in March. In the "more info than you asked about" realm - Fender stopped using the extra "S" prefix on Artist Series instruments in 2010 (they did the same thing with American Deluxes, dropping the extra "D" prefix).

If it is all the original neck and body then you'd need to go off the later date.
What colour is the finish?
The small amount of paint in the neck pocket appears to be black.
Which leads to the thought that it should have Blackie on the headstock face.

Looks like pewter to me!
The dark stuff around the neck pocket must be undercoat.

I agree - it looks like the color is pewter.

Also I think the neck date is 1991 or 1992 - it's kind of rubbed off (or wasn't stamped fully). It was just the serial number decals that were printed up in 1989; not that the neck was made in 1989.

You'll also find those "SE9 xxxxx" serial number decals on models that didn't come out until 1992 like the SRV and the Sambora Strats.

Actually the color was called "Anthracite" not Pewter. I have the same guitar, although mine is from '89 (neck and body dates are the same), got it new with all the paperwork and the color was called Anthracite, which is a pewter color.

I've read on certain websites that Pewter was often referred as "Charcoal Grey" while Torino Red, Candy Apple Green and Olympic White were called "Ferrari Red", "7-Up Green" and "Alpine White".

This one's really been kicked around by us like an abused husband. You're technically correct. However, A.R. Duchossior makes the point in his book that the company started out with 'anthracite' and then changed it to 'pewter'. In that your documentation specifies the former, it would be interesting to learn precisely when Fender changed the wording on their documents to the latter.

As an aside, the neck pocket date on my 'anthropewt' Clapton, second owner, no papers, is ??-5-1990 and the neck end date is Mar 8? 1990. The serial number is SE 900891.

In so many of the similar discussions we've had about dating instruments, we've come to find the slovenly way these date numbers have been entered either by hand, or ink stamps, then over-written with letter stamps, signatures, labels and the lot. It certainly is pathetic to say the least. :?

ZZDoc you make a good point. I have seen dealer pricelist/pullouts (color from '90) that state "Anthracite (Pewter)" so my guess is sometime during or after 91 they went fully to Pewter as the term for the color. The color poster I have from 91 shows Pewter (043) so I guess we can call it 91 and be correct...

You, Xhefri, and I own guitars of the same date/vintage and 'cleaness'. All of them appear to have the same finish as the OP's. Hence, I can only assume that there was no change in the pigment formulation for the paint.
