Hi everyone,

Over the summer I purchased a slightly used, but great condition 2014 Fender FSR MIM Stratocaster. I've done a fret level, fret shape and dress, and complete setup. I have tried to set the intonation four or five times, and it always comes down to it being intonated fine everywhere except the 12th fret (10 to 15 cents flat). I believe there may be an issue with the 12th fret spacing. This is based on measurements taken with micrometers (space between 11 & 12 is only .010-.012 more than the space between 12 & 13), and also by comparison to my other MIM Stratocaster I have. I think you can tell just by looking at it by eye, but maybe that's just me. I do not believe it is a fret shape issue. I guess my questions are: Is this possibly covered under a warranty? If not, what other options do I have to fix it? It is a beautiful neck otherwise, as it has a nice figured pattern on it.

Take it to where you bought it and find out!

You can get the fret positions from here: StewMac Fret Calculator
Compare the 10-11, 11-12, 12-13, 13-14 fret distances - and double check with measures from the fret edges (front to front and back to back).
Take also the "rough measure" of your scale length when the guitar is intonated as you want it (distance from nut to saddle, free string length), and measure the distances from a) nut to 12th fret and b) 12th fret to saddle.

One misplaced fret on a Fender neck is IMHO not very likely, but anything is possible. But check those measures first, then contact the Fender Consumer Relations if there is something wrong. (That DIY fret job may of course complicate things...)
It's of course possible to take a misplaced fret off, fill the slot and saw a new one on the correct spot. Not easy to do properly and with a result that satisfies the critical eye, if you're not a pro.

And keep us posted on the situation.

Thanks for the sugestions. I ended up taking her back in to GC where I bought her, and they agreed something wasn't right at 12, so they are ordering me a new one. Going to miss her as she played very soft, but not the aggravation of her sounding off. I'm out a bone nut, a string tree upgrade, a few sets of strings, fuel and my time...meh not a huge deal in the big picture. Thanks again for the thoughtful replys. I'll post some pics on NGD. 8)

Oh, from the measurements I took, it looks like the 12th fret was .028 shy according to the stewmac calculator. I have no idea if there is a translation into cents of intonation for a particular scale length, but my guess would be 8 cents  Not a huge amount, but just enough to bug someone that's AR about intonation. I already have quite a collection of stewmac tools, looks like a fret scale rule is next on my list :D

That would have driven me nuts also. Even if it's just a few cents off... I'll hear it and would not be able to stand it.
Happy everything worked out and you have a new one on the way 8)
