I have a '96 MIA Standard Strat and I played an '08 Standard the other day. The action on the '08 blew me away. I am thinking about having a pro set up done on the '96. Hypothetically speaking, do you think it feasible for them to get the action similar? Or are there too many differences in the new style that would prevent it from happening?

Thanks,
Jim

Nope it shouldn't be a problem for a pro to set that up. He might have to file down a few frets and tweak things here and there. But i wouldn't be worried, the action isn't to hard to setup to your liking (especially for a tech).

All guitars have minute differences but I think a good quitar tech should be able to get it very close. Hey my guy that I use once took a guild, that some one left in an attick and the action was pretty much ruined, and worked his magic and it felt good as new. as long as there are no major unrepairable problems they should be able to work there magic on a guitar like the Strat that was designed to be individual player friendly

Just to clarify here when you say Action we both agree that you are referring to the height of the strings off the fretboard... with that said...
I am guessing it is very likely u will experience atleast improvements in the action and the way it plays with a set up...
(sounds like the strat u played is talking to u telling u how u might want ur axe setup lol)
What you need to identify is what was different about the setup on the other guitar you liked that made it better...
Was it higher or lower action?
What were the gauge strings it had on it?
Do you remember?
There are many factors that can be anylized...

Then get that info to ur guy who is doing the setup for you...
It helps greatly if u kno what ur going for ("please lower my action sir but I dont want fret buz...") so that you can tell them how to set it up or what to change...

Wow, thanks everyone!

bss, yes I was referring to the height of the strings off the fretboard. The action on the '08 was lower than mine. I don't even like to play mine now. I don't know if the strings have been changed (it was at a GC so I don't think so), and the specs from the Fender site here says that the factory installed strings are Fender® Standard Tension™ Bullet ST3250L, Nickel Plated Steel, (.009 to .042). I am not sure if the shop I am taking it to has Fender strings. If not I was thinking of going with EB Slinkies. Any thoughts on that?

He'll need measurements, but it's very doable.

When new many guitars don't have the strings any of us would choose to have on our own guitars; most players I know (or knew) get/got a set of thier favorite strings for free as they leave/left the store.
Any brand YOY like is fine; YOU have to live with them; not anyone here.
I would steer you to MY brand just as fast as some one else would steer you to their brand. So I will give you this advice: Stay away from strange brands and really low prices; Those strings in a "bargain" baskets are usually non- sellers and no one buys them for a reason....and they are no bargain.
Fender strings are fine, as are Ernie Ball, D'Adarrio, Gibson, GHS (Boomers used to be a fav of mine) I could go on and on. Most players settle on a brand that stays in tune, sounds nice with the rig (amp and effects) THEY have. I don't play Ernie Ball because at the time I tried them they wouldn't stay in tune; now I realize they were probably slipping on the tuning machine and that was my fault and not a string problem. I'm sure EBs are fine so far as tuning goes are they wouldn't be a round after 30 + years.
Another string thing to look for is how they react to your sweat; if you have a lot of acid in your sweat you may want to consider stainless steel strings; they sound fine, and last a long time; you just have to experiment for yourself as there are too many variables to say "Buy these and you'll be happy"

I think Fender strings are great, but there alot of good strings out there. I have also had good experiences with D'Addarrio strings but u should experiment with that... first figure out what u want out of your setup... its ok to goto the new strings u want when getting the setup.

I used to use Fender 150's but for some reason they seemed to change quality wise. When the Super Bullets first came out , I thought it was great idea, but I do big bends and back then then for some reason, I would lose the string at the bullet end. After that I went to Dean Markley High Output LH. Hands down the best strings I ever had on my Strat but they were discontinued. Now for the past 15 years is been D'Addarrio.

I would find the strings you like the tone/feel of and get the guitar set up to them. Otherwise you'll be constantly tweaking the action.

Is it the same string u are breaking at the ball end? If so maybe you have a spot that needs to be filed down or there is an edge thats getting your string...Only those strings? r u sure?

Yep I'm sure. My Strat is an original 72, I'm not filing anything on it. I've had the guitar since it was new and never had a problem with string breakage, Like I said, this was years ago when they first came out. Maybe they're better now, I don't know. I'm not a big fan of Fender strings now anyway.

The good thing is the string problem made me look outside the box and see there are a lot of different string manufacturers out there that are much better.
Don't get me wrong, I still like Fender gear, I still have one of the big monster Fender Fuzz Wahs that I bought in 73 and I still use it today as a secret weapon for classic rock stuff. I just don't care for their strings. If they work for you and you like them, keep using them.

I think most guitar techs would tell you to pick a guage and stick with as the setup will generally work for that guage but be off if you change like from 10's to 9's. What the strings are made of or brand probably will not have much effect on the setup per se. Changing guage will usually affect the setup as normally that would change the tension and probably intonation as well.
