I own a MIM which weight around 7.5 lbs and a MIJ which weight around 6.8 lbs. I was quite suprised by the difference in weight and it can easily be felt. Now it almost feels like my MIM is heavy, fat, sluggish.

Which strats are the lightest, is it a particular series or is it all individual?

You have a couple of fairly light Strats. My Am Dlx is 8# 8oz., my CS Clapton was 7# 10oz., my Warmouth parts caster is 7# 4oz.
I know that Gibson separates the blanks based on weight and uses the lightest wood for the more expensive models. I don't know if Fender does that.

Very interesting indeed. I would like to hear more input on this :)
I'm guessing my MIJ is basswood and I know the MIM is Alder for sure.

Overall... the 7 1/5 pound range seems to be pretty much the average weight for a Strat.
Swamp Ash can be a couple pounds lighter... but even with those you can get some in the 7-8 pound range... Northern Ash is always going to be heavier being a consistently denser species of Ash.

Northern Ash and Swamp Ash both sound killer... I like them both.... I also dig Alder... and Mahogany... good woods for a Strat... but Mahogany can be boat anchor heavy in the 9-10 pound arena 8)

Thank you so much for the info. Very fascinating.

Would you agree that particular series/years/models of guitars are of particular weight or do they all vary even in the same series? Like, are The Standard MIA heavier than Standard MIM or are they the same?

I really like guitars that are on the lighter side like my MIJ because that's what I am used to. Where would I have to look to be more likely to find one like this, is it possible with any of the recent models?

The weight depends on the wood species chosen, and also on the density of individual wood pieces in a guitar.
Variations are really big, both between different woods and inside any given wood species.
That may be the reason why Fender (like most manufacturers) don't specify the weight in the specs. If you want a light/medium/heavy guitar, you have to weigh it. Ain't no biggie - after all, we all test play guitars before we buy them, don't we..?

This is from my October post:

As a summary: a Strat weighs anything from a little under 7lbs to a little over 10lbs.

And then, of course, there are the Light Ash Strats and the Heavy Metal Strats...
