While I am not the biggest Mark Knopfler fan ever, I do respect his playing and song writing. I am however a big fan of 60s style stratocasters. After foolishly selling my AV 62 reissue I am ready to get another strat. Does anyone own or have played one. Any thoughts on the Texas special pick-ups?

Hello Funkyguitarman,

Great looking nitro red paint.
Rosewood fretboard.
7.25 fretboard radius.
1.625 nut width.

played it side by side same amp
against a SRV which also has Texas Specials.

Two distinct sounds maybe pots or caps or
some other electrickery.

Bottom line I liked it,
but you really should play one.

Cheers

Thanks alot MrBill. Unfortunately no music stores in San Antonio carry a MK strat but I have seen some SRV models. While I want another strat to play blues/rock on and being a bona-fide SRV fanatic, I don't want to buy his sig guitar. I hate huge necks and already have 3 tone burst telecaster.

Hello Funkyguitarman,

Those Knopfler guitar are uncommon,
but there is also the
Deluxe Roadhouse Strat
also Texas Special equipped.
Made in Mexico for under $600.

Cheers.

Noting above: Those two guitars differ in body woods (alder vs ash); fret board woods (pao ferro vs. rosewood; neck mass; and finish. This would certainly influence tone. I have another issue to pursue in this regard.

Question for the historians out there:

Fender obviously put this guitar together with MK for the market.

We all know who built his main recording axe of the 80's. If you've ever played one of those you know that it is a totally different beast from the neck right down to, and including the EMG's. It, and it's 'brother' are still offered by the maker as the MK I and MK II.

Somewhere in the back my mind is a little voice telling me that MK's 'strat' of the Dire Straits era was NOT a Fender.

Any takers????

........and not to digress from your question, a Sam Ash dealer near me was willing to order a Jeff Beck guitar for me to audition on the chance I might buy it, knowing he would definitely sell it to someone. Shop around. Maybe you can luck out on the same courtesy.

If not, find a guitar with a '62 neck, audition that and, if you like it, take the plunge with the Knopfler sight unseen. Might even check out the '57 Hotrod if you can find one of those. Interesting neck profile. I maintain it's the old "Blackie" come back from the vault in disguise.

Hello ZZDoc,

When I was test driving those two guitars
I was taking into consideration wood variations,
but I was so suprised at the tone differance
I chalked it up to something in the electronics.

I played my bit of "Sultans of Swing"and was
very suprised at the super tone, not that
anybody thought Mark Knopfler was in the store
but a few were eyeing that axe like a
well upholstered Dallas Cheerleader.

Hot rod red color was neat too.

Cheers.

I play a '06 Highway One with five springs in the trem and CS TX Spc pickups. The pickups are great. I've tried many, and they're the best I've ever heard. They are far from the strings to avoid the magnetic interference. This is a 9.5 inch radius guitar that's theoretically a little better for lead down in the high-numbered frets. The set up from the guitar whiz at Wild West Guitars in Riverside made a lot of difference.

Hello Funkyguitarman, Zzdoc, and all,

Did a little research,

Mark Knopfler capacitor --- .1uF
Strvie Ray Vaughan capacitor --- .022uF
Roadhouse capacitor ---.022uF

I'm thinking that what made the
bulk of the differance.

Cheers.

Do you know what the Highway One capacitor is? Based on tone, I'm guessing it's similar to SRV.

Hello Strat58cat,

Highway one has two capacitors --- .1uF and .02uF
also a metal film resistor.

Keep in mind highway one
doesn't have Texas special pickups,
and does have greasebucket circitry.

Cheers.

I've been thinking of this guitar for a long time.. I love Knopfler's playing, especially the tone, so it's good to hear of your experience playing one, Mr Bill.

Has anyone else tried this and has their opinion to offer up? Living where I do I doubt I'd ever get to try one out prior to purchase, unfortunately!
