That was a great example, thanks stratmangler.

You can see the "kill switch" in action around 2:16.

Hey Doc, they come to me a lot of the time, due to my website. I also keep an eye out everywhere. Craigs List, eBay, Reverb etc.

Your guitar turned out really nice!!! Does she play well and sound good? Do you like the combo of pickups?

The only thing I would have done different was to have used a Black/Red/Black pickguard. It would have set off the Firestorm finish a little more!

You are suggesting that Xhefri is in league with dwarves? Sauron would be pleased.

Roger that! Last read the trilogy myself over 45 years ago. However, given the current motion picture release I should know better. Between orcs, goblins, and trolls, one can get his beasties confused. Dwarves it is!!

I have never read the JR Tolkien books and the only CS Lewis I have read was The Screw Tape Letters. I think I watched about 45 minutes of one of the Trilogy movies. But from what little I know about Sauron I am hoping he would NOT be pleased! My dwarfs are on the good/light side and not the dark side. They have nice names like Faith, Hope and Happy. Happy New Year and nice thread about these cool guitars!

It sounds good, just slightly less resonant compared to my other one, but I noticed my Tone Knob was on my Bridge Pickup, unlike my other one, so I'll retest after re soldering.

Where do you find those Black/Red/Black Pickguards? They look sweet!

For your cut Warmoth is a good place to get them. I do think it would set off your Firestorm finish in a nice way.

I wanted to update my Firestorm Build to where she sits today.

I always wondered about the experts for and against the "snake oil" topics like wood, Brass trem blocks, sanding the block, effect on tone by neck type...

Well I think the type of Amp or Modeler may have some bearing on these effects. When I was running an AxeFX II I would agree that all that stuff was snake oil. But since I switched back to a Half Stack (currently a Diezel D-Moll & Diezel 4x12 Front Loaded Cab) that Woods have a huge effect.

This Firestorm guitar of mine was getting neglected during gigs because my White one sustained, sang & felt so much better. So I set off on a journey to bring it up to my White Custom Build. Keep in mind ALL electronics were IDENTICAL........ Both Bodies are Alder. Identical Tremolo Systems. White 1998 neck & 2014 body. Firestorm 2014 Neck & 1990 Body. Necks same wood, just different years.

So I matched Heights of everything as close as I could. Firestorm was still brighter. Double & Triple checked my wiring & pot values. Still brighter.

So I bought a neck from the same era. 2001 same silver logo. Boom, now I can play this guitar. Now she resonates, I can get it to feedback much easier. It is still a tad bit brighter than the white one, but way closer sonically. It's more than a backup now, I can play it all night if I want now.

So now I'm experimenting with sanding the top of the Tremolo Block like Eric Johnson guitars & using 5 Vintage Springs. I'll report on that after next practice.

Here are some pics of it today. I took Xhferi's advice and did the black-red-black pick guard as well.

Food for thought. I recall our discussions with Mike Eldred as to what is different between an Artist Series Clapton and a Custom Shop [Teambuilt/Masterbuilt] guitar. He remarked that the production line guitar would have a 3 piece body whereas a Custom Shop guitar would have a two piece. Guitars which have a paint finish would not have their woods selected as carefully as a guitar with a finish where the grain pattern is an important contribution to the 'look' of the instrument. The nature of the paint and other elements of the finish might also affect tonal quality. Poly vs nitro coating for example. Woods will differ based upon age. Old growth vs second growth where, in the latter, the wood is younger and hence, kiln dried as opposed to being aged naturally. As you noted, you swapped out the neck and the tone changed. Then there's body weight, how the guitars were hand finished. Differences in tenths of a millimeter in contouring the body/neck and on which locus of points. As I see it, no matter how alike one might believe two instruments are, they are really quite different.
