HI folks,

The low E string when I play it open, buzzes at around the 17th fret.

Can anyone please tell me how I can stop this, is it a case of increasing the action? I have a kahler traditional tremelo.

Many thanks

Hey man I had that. awful, hate it.
The fret that it's buzzing against... take it out.
You don't need it up that high anyway !!!

OR... you could first put new strings on (old strings resonate weirdly), then if you need, raise only the low E string saddle, a tiny bit.

Hope that helps

New strings, higher action, unbelievably straight neck with no "fall off".

You might try playing that note on the 5th string (A) 12th fret &/or follow Johnny's advice.

I realize that it's more difficult to W-W-Wail away on the 5th, but that's the price you pay for your art.

How hard are you plucking that string?
I can make both of my Strat's low E string buzz by picking it a lot harder than I'd do playing normally.

One (an American Deluxe) buzzes around the area of the 17th fret, the other (an old Mexican Standard) buzzes around the 11th fret area.

The forum could go on for a lot of pages trying to guess what's wrong.
But: what kind of setup do you have now? (That's taking the long way, but eventually will teach you a lot.)

Oh, I'll quote Rob Schwartz's post on buzzing from some time ago:
Quote:
If the buzz occurs played open......it's likely the nut.
If the buzz occurs at the low end......neck is likely too straight (overbow).
If the buzz occurs on the high end.....neck likely has too much relief (underbow or backbow)
Within those---if the neck is warped or twisted....well there ya go..its gonna buzz.
If the buzz occurs on specific strings at specific frets…… it could be low or high frets.

There is also the possibility of a fret that is a little high. Or maybe the one behind it is a little low.
A short straight edge can be useful for checking that. Of course there will be relief so you're not looking for flat, you're looking for one or possibly two frets that don't seem to follow the same curvature as the rest. What you will be doing is looking at gaps up and down the neck and then comparing them to the area in question. It is rare but on occasion a guitar passes through with one of the frets not perfectly seated.

Bridge or sadlle height don't change by itself.

Neck move and action goes higher or lower .

Look you need a truss rod adjustment.

Sounds to me like someone has used the truss rod to get higher action instead of adjusting the bridge. The truss rod only bends the neck where it's thin, i.e. up to the 15th fret or so.
Or that the neck heel has contracted with age, in which case shimming it a tad at the bridge side of the neck pocket followed by a truss rod tightening would likely have positive results.

As fate would have it, StewMac just released a Dan Erlewine "Trade Secrets" video on fixing Fret Buzz.

Dan makes it look sooo easy, all you need is the right tools. hehehe

StewMac Fixin' Fret Buzz

One caveat, it likely doesn't apply to the OP's problem, but it is a coincidental Red Herring.

I've got an '83 MIJ Electra that could use this treatment and would have a real nice neck then.

Stew mac show how to fix fret wire when there is a buzz with string is fretted.

Not the same when string are play open as GravyYelp write ;
"The low E string when I play it open, buzzes at around the 17th fret."

His problem look to be a truss rod adjustment as some members write here, not a fix of fret wire .

A proper fret file makes an easier and more consistent job than a triangle file and a hand rolling manipulation.

You guys wanna go high-tech with tools even though it's still unclear if the OP needs a fret (or several) dressed or if just a truss rod adjustment would do...

BTW, I dressed frets with a feather edge file (grinded the edges round) for at least a decade before any fret files became available here - no online stores, you know. Even now, I use triangle files more than fret files.

.

How a worn fret may cause a buzz when a string is played open?
1- Action is too low for this string only .
Why ? saddle don't move by itself . GY put a lower strings gauge ? Or he do some work on guitar...

IMO it is more a truss rod adjustment without more information.

I hope GravyYelp did not forget to mention important information and that the guitar has always been perfect before the problem occurs.

GravyYelp can you answer please ?

Thanks for all the replies folks.

It's been sat in my loft for 15 years, recently decided to clean it up and start playing again. I can't remember any buzzing when I've played it since then. I've also taken off the term and cleaned it up, replaced strings and now the problem occurs, when I play the string open not fretted.
