Hello there, I was randomly looking for a guitar when this caught my attention.

Somebody is selling it really cheap, I've talked to him and he says that the bridge & neck pickups were removed and I believe that those metallic plates are some sort of covers. He says that he bought this guitar 6 years ago from someone and he doesn't know where it's from (he said he believes it might be Canada). I've asked him for a serial number and he said that he'll send it to me when he gets home.

Judging by the headstock it could be from the 70's. What do you guys think, is it genuine? These are the only photos that he displays in his ad.

I'm certainly no expert on Fender guitars, but I believe the neck is a fake! The spacing of the dots on the 12th fret are too far apart.

Check some pictures of Strats on the internet, you will see what I mean.

It's never a good sign if there ain't no "Fender" label on the headstock.

I'd say that's a Squier, Standard if you're lucky but otherwise an Affinity. Can't be sure, the pics go really pixely if I try to magnify.
Those "metal covers" sure look like humbuckers.

The color (Aztec Gold) is fantastic, so the whole thing boils down to how it plays and sounds compared to the price asked.
[Some estimates: A Standard might be OK for 150€-200€ (provided those are pickups and not covers), an Affinity should be cheaper, maybe 100€-125€. And: these based on the European price level, in the US maybe less.]

Here's something on the Standard: viewtopic.php?t=28471

The thing is that I asked the guy who's selling the guitar and he told me that he took out the bridge & neck pickups so unless these are old photo's, they might be just covers. The 12th fret dot spacing is indeed unusual, thanks for noticing that.

Considering that he said he bought this guitar 6 years ago and who knows for how much the other owner had it, maybe the logo got "washed" away?

I like that color too, and it looks quite rare. All the Squires that are sold in my country (Romania) usually come in black/white/blue/red/sunburst and other common colors.

You're quite right, jmattis, he is selling it for 150 euros. Would you tell me when did Squier produce these models?

I'd have thought someone would have picked up on the 22 frets by now.
If it were a 70s instrument you'd have 21 frets.

It might be a Squier, but I wouldn't put any money on it.
It isn't a bargain find either - no long lost 70s model here!

it could be a replacement neck, the original could have gotten damaged

Something else - it has a 2 point tremolo, and by the looks of it it's not a Fender bridge.

I'm no expert but I see enough to tell me that it most certainly is not an authentic Fender Strat. From the bridge, pick ups, neck, and the volume control. So if you decide to purchase it, be aware that itmost likely it's a parts caster.

Best of luck.

+1...Looks to be an authentic Strat, probably a Squier but has been modified to the hilt. It most certainly did not leave the Fender factory that way. Run away from this one...Fast!

Yeah, hacked/modified/whatever....the "Standard" on the headstock
is similiar to a Squier Stratocaster Standard, which some say is better
than an Affinity. It looks like "Squier" was removed from headstock.

Anyone else notice the placement of the volume pot? I don't recall ever seeing it in that position, very odd.

Nice catch socal323. Definitely not a standard placement of the volume pot.

On the gold one?
It's been moved - the original hole is still there. That awful cover that occupies the space where the bridge pickup should be is the reason.
There's no way the volume pot could fit so close to that cover and still be useable.

There's no selector switch either, if you hadn't noticed.
Having said that there's only one pickup looks to be fitted and working, and that's the middle one.
