Hi, I am a beginner, been playing on a cheap guitar for few months, and then last week I bought a Clapton stratocaster (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ ... ic-guitar/). The middle knob for tone on this new guitar rolls evenly until mid way, and then there's a little hump that I have to roll over to get to the higher settings. Is this some sort of a feature or did I get a bad guitar? The cheaper guitar rolls evenly from 0 - 10. Thanks for any answers you could provide me with.

Yeah it has a detent for various tone settings. I bought a 96 (new) with Lace Sensors and I love everything about it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

@ido1957, Thank you. I am hoping I will enjoy it to the fullest. Darn pets are not living long enough, so I've decided to seek refuge in this thing, hopefully for a long, long time :D

Clapton swapped the TBX for a regular 250K tone pot; he found the Vintage Noiseless pickups bright enough to his taste.

There's a rumour saying that Eric was not happy with the TBX, stating the tone was too muddy.

You're not the first to acquire a Clapton guitar and be unfamiliar with the nuances of the circuitry. We've had detailed discussions about the particulars of it across the past 7.5 years of thes forums. There are many resources in the the guitar literature to understanding how the TBX works. As Chromeface has noted, years back, we were surprised to learn that Clapton had removed that pot from his stage guitar to suit his own particular ear. You now own one of the most versatile instruments in the Stratocaster stable and, IMHO, the best damn neck they produce. Each to his own, though.

One point in particular. Remove the guitar cable when not in use. The plug activates the midboost circuit via a special jack, and you will reduce battery life by keeping the plug in place.

@ZZDoc, Thank you for your input. I read about the technology before I came over to the forum, but I was still a bit confused because I'm new to this stuff, so I thought I would post it here. Thanks for the nice things you said about the guitar as well. It makes me feel more attached to it now :-) And thanks for the tip about unhooking the cable. I didn't read that piece of information anywhere else, and I'm glad you said that!

ZZDoc is right about the neck on the Clapton Strat being the best. I have three other guitars that I love, but every time I play my Clapton Strat I realize how phenomenal the neck (and everything else about the guitar) are.

The "Clapton" backshape is modeled after the neck from an old Martin dreadnought acoustic Eric played extensively during the 1970s. The guitar in question became the basis for the first EC signature model in 1992.

Thus far, I haven't found a local vendor who has one of those Martin EC's in stock to audition. I'd love to get a hand on that neck.

My friend in England has a Martin Clapton Signature with the soft V. It felt just like my Clapton Strat when I played it. At least the neck profile did. Much higher action, of course. Beautiful guitar, which I guess is expected.

Thanks for the heads up on that.

Bear in mind the early Clapton prototypes sported a "mode" switch to turn off the Elite preamp.

On the Sambora Strat that switch came in the form of a push/push button.

Though my prototype has the mini-toggle mode switch, we've really never determined how many, if any, were actually shipped to dealers unmodified, i.e. with the switch and a 21 fret neck. We've seen early ads for the Clapton guitars portaying same, but nothing more. We've also recognized that the photos of Eric's 1986 pewter prototype serial #V00009 which A.R. Duchossoir features on the front and back covers and the foreward of the first edition of his Stratocaster paperback [pub 1988] show it with a 21 fret neck, cigarette burns and all, but no mini-toggle. Based upon my prior conversations with FMC regarding this guitar model, their records dating back to that period are extremely poor, and have been of no value in many of our queries. The best the company could do for me in that regard was to confirm that one set of initials on the neck end of my guitar did, indeed, belong to an employee of the Custom Shop in 1986. There is also a forum member in Europe who has a Clapton neck of the same vintage, the old Custom Shop logo on the headstock rear, and with the sames sets of initials on it. It suggests to me that they possibly had made run of Clapton necks with 21 frets and chucked the lot when Eric opted for a 22 fret board. You, in prior comments, over the years, have often provided the date when the 22 fret neck went on the guitar.

Any additional questions from 'ST' certainly will be welcome.
