So, i bought a MIM Strat last month, and was wondering what a good amp would be for aroud 300 GBP max, I want something with a nice crunch sound, and i am not really sure what i should be looking for, as this is my first time looking for an amp.

Thanks in advance.

Fender Super Champ X2 comes in at just a little bit over £300

Blackstar HT-5R is £349
If you're not too fussed about having reverb built in there's the lower priced HT-5C at £299

One thing they all have in common is that they're all valve (tube) amps :)
If you can find another £100 you could get a Marshall SL-5, which is also all valve.

If you want to go Solid state then try out one of the new Fender Champion 100 Models. I've been hearing a lot of good things about those amps.

The Blackstar tube circuit sounds great and versatile, even better with a good vintage tube like RCA or Tungsol in V1.

But for serious fun, the Fender Mustang II or III (V.2) has awesome emulations of classic Fender tube amps, cabs, speakers, and others like Marshal, VoxAC30, and Engl, and any send FX loop or pre input pedal effect you'd want, stereo.
They just sound BIG, crunchy and whatever overdriven saturated mad sustain you want , lush playing with headphones.

It's mad... I've had Multi FX gear, Boss GT10 and other solid state FX...I sold em all, sounded crap.
So I stuck to the old real deal gear, I was NEVER gonna do modern techno gear again.

This makes my guitars sound like they should!! Especially with good headphones. I take it to small jam sessions, the speaker sound good.
I don't know what they did, but for the price, it's very up there in direct out amp and FX emulation eg. AxeFX.
The software lets you edit patches as you play, record direct via USB, or stereo audio cable out.
So you'd want to record it's full stereo FX like Delays, chorus etc... well I do.
I would go freakin insaaaane... if I ever break it

I have been witness to the evolution of guitar tone across the better than half century since the Stratocaster came on the scene. I have to chuckle remembering what Buddy Holly's guitar sounded like and having that morph into the likes of Jimi Hendrix.

And if you are partial to that Hendrix sound, you gotta consider Marshall. I'm not sure what is in your price range however.

Jimi used a lot of Fender amps as well.... I would also suggest the Mustang line... They do have decent Marshall amp moels in them... I use the "plexi" model often... It sound like a "Plexi" and the Fender models are incredible. Very affordable and dependable... lots of good, usable tones in the Mustang amps.

To my ears, a Fender Guitar through a Fender Tube amp is heaven. Johnny Marr professes this a lot. :)

I've got a Fender Blues Junior III and a Hot Rod Deville 212. I can asure that Johnny is right!

In truth, it's all totally subjective.

Ask 10 people and get 10 answers... But none of their answers may be right for you... !!

Head down to your local git shop(s) with your new guitar and try everything you can within your price budget (yes... they'll let you do that   ). Forget about the logos on the front, just let your own ears decide.

The right amp will make itself known to you..

Good Luck !!

cheers!

A Pro Junior is a great little valve amp which will perform. If you want that crunch as you say you have to overdrive an amp, a valve/tube amp. Wattage is going to be entirely dependent on your location and potential neighbors earshot vicinity.

As for digital / solid state replication of Valve amps. NO .. Play a Twin Reverb next to a Mustang or whatever digital replication modded amp. It is not the same sound. Physics come into play as an 8inch speaker is never going to be able to be a Bassman or a Twin Reverb or let alone a 4 speaker 100 watt Marshall or Univox or even a 1960's Magnatone.
Granted the sound will be in the range but still far away when push comes to shove. You can do more thru an overdriven small tube amp with your fingers and hands then you can with a myriad of boxes and software programs. The latter are always clipped and compressed and never sensitive enough to detect minute difference of attack.

BTW... Do some research on the modded amps and see how many pre-owned are for sale on the second hand market. They do not last, the internals are not of the highest quality for if they were you would be looking at a price range of $3,500 for a custom built amp with top of the shelf circuitry.
When it comes to amps, the simpler the better. Vol. Tone, Reverb (spring not digital ) tone parameters such as EQ are nice ( Mesa Boogie ) but again great small amps are not inexpensive.
Best to initially spend a few hundred dollars then to replace or change amps every couple months.
Do some legwork and let your ears and bring someone who's been around, preferably a seasoned player who gigs.

Not to rain on our parade but unfortunately, the kind of smooth, creamy, tone we are seeking these days, [SRV as opposed to Buddy Holly] is created by overdriving tube amps. This has to be done at volume settings unfit for human ears. One of the reasons why my Boogie King Snake's circuitry was updated and wired with 100w/60w/10w settings. The Clapton Signature amps also have selectable power settings. A power soak is often suggested to players who seek headroom in the bedroom. My mother's protestations as to the 'loudness' of our 15W Danelectro 'Centurion' amps more than 50 years ago would pale in the light of contemporary gear.

Ha Ha Doc... I can attest to that when comparing my 15 watt Magnatone to my Fender 15 Pro-junior.
Not even in the same ballpark. Great sound out of both but whereas I could use the Pro-Junior in a small club, the Magnaton ehas absolutely not chance of being heard over the quietest of drum kits.
If your drummer follows in the John Bonham Neil Peart or carmine Appice. Foget bout et.. lol
