I have a Japanese Fender 50's reissue Stratocaster made in early 1990 -2 tone sunburst,one-piece V-shape maple neck and round string tree. I adore this guitar beyond words, but to my slight shame,I'm not sure what wood the body is. I believe basswood was commonly used by Fender Japan back then. Does anybody know for sure?

I would think it would depend on the model number. They have a 54 reisssue but it might be a lower quality 54. For example, I had a ST54-110 and it was better spec'd than a ST54-65.

Got any pictures?

FYI: The 120, 110....65 is usually associated with the cost in yen at the time of manufacture.

No, the serial number doesn't tell the model.
The model number is something like that ST-54, and it's in the neck pocket.

My guess is it's basswood. But would you (or anybody else) hear the difference if it was alder?

50's Reissue Stratocasters MIJ during this time frame (1990) had bodies made from Basswood, according to the Fender Frontlines from that time frame.

They did not have a 1954 Reissue back then yet.

There she is! I've had her since she was new,and I'll never ever part with her. Sounds wonderful, looks wonderful (love the way the pickup covers have yellowed over the years) and the chunky V-neck with 7,25" radius and quite low frets play perfectly.(I took some very fine sandpaper and rubbed down the gloss finnish on the back of the neck a little)
A really wonderful Strat! :D

Thank you for all the kind words! I've just bought a new addition to my modest Fender collection on ebay. A rather rare bird that should arrive shortly. Can't wait to show her off here!

Actually they did make MIJ 54 Ri Strats back then and since the ealy 80's. You can tell It's a 54 Ri by the string tree, circle one signifies 54Ri regular string tree signifies 57 Ri. Typically most early 90's MIJ basswood body Strats were "Foto Flames" There's a chance your body is Alder or Ash. A real 54Ri would have an Ash body. Not really much difference between a 54 & 57 mij reissue other than the string tree. If you can get a close up pic of the wood grain that would help Id the wood. Hope this helps.

Chris

This is my MIJ 50s reissue, made in 1994.
Sold in England as '57 reissue at the time. (Has the '54 string tree)
The body doesn't look like basswood to me.
