Yesterday I was playing scales all over the neck and, when playing scales at the 1st frets (1-4), I kept hearing this strange noise going from the Low E to the A string. Like a note was being played in between. I then realized that when removing my finger from the 1st frets of the low E, a quite audible sound (really like a pull-off) could be heard.

Is this normal? If not... what can be the reason? Pickup height (although I can hear it with all pickups)?

Cheers

PS: It sounds like a pull-off, but it is not a pull-off! Just wanted to make sure this was clear!!! :D

Better than any words...
Can you have a look at this and let me know what you think?

Three first notes of a pentatonic minor in F. I can hear a 4th note with the last note of the scale... Or am I going insane? :D

Maybe. You pull your finger off of the string......and the sound made is like a pull-off. Hmmmm.......

No... It is not a pull-off! :D
I just simply lift the finger of the fretboard... no angle, and definitely not pulling the string. It only makes it on the low E...

Did you listen to it? Do you agree it is odd? Or am I imagining things?

What else could it be? Maybe your finger or string is sticky, maybe your amp is great and can produce the subtle sound, I don't know. Unintentional? Maybe, but seems like a pull off sound nonetheless. Maybe you have a high fret in there somewhere? How is your setup? Did this just start happening?

I just noticed it really... and, of course, it is not really a major issue or something that is very perceptible (is it perceptible on the recording or not? Maybe it is just in my head!).

I am sure it's not a problem with my playing... I guess it's mostly because I am playing on a mustang II, through headphones. I can pick all sorts of sounds that I can't through the amp's speaker. It's just that through the headphones I can hear that low E being released quite easily. And I was wondering if this is normal and if not, if it was easy to identify the culprit.

You're definitely not imagining it, I can hear it on the recording, and it sounds just like a pull off sound, as if your finger is sticking to the string or you are flicking the string a bit when removing from the string.

At least I am not crazy... :)
Well... I am not doing a pull-off! But yeah, it sounds like one (thus the title of the thread!!! :) ). Don't get it, really...

I mean, the pickups get every little sound of simply pressing the strings on the fretboard. But only the low E vibrates like that (while producing that audible and sustained sound).

So... this is not normal, or is it? Am I supposed to mute the low E every time I remove my fingers from it?

What you're talking about is easily heard in the recording, and it's best to be brutally honest about it - you need to improve your string damping technique with both hands!
Sorry for being so blunt!

You don't need to be sorry at all!

I much prefer it to be my problem than the guitar's problem. If it is my problem, I can work on it and keep learning! I haven't been playing guitar for long... so telling me I have to work on my technique is just an incentive for me to become better.

So... You are telling me there is nothing wrong with the guitar! There is something wrong with me! Is that correct!? :D Hope so... :)

PS: But why it only makes this louder and longer lasting sound when lifting my fingers of the low E?

I can do something similar on my acoustic (nearest guitar to hand), and it can be stopped with a bit of left and/or right hand damping, which is something that you will need to work out for yourself (ie find out what works for you).

The video gives you a decent push in the right direction

I can relate, having a similar problem playing part of "War Pigs - Black Sabbath", trying to pull off the A string, it is difficult for me to keep the open A note from ringing out without also hitting the D string.

I have another problem muting open strings on several chords. In particular, when I play an F minor add 9 ("Starship Trooper - Yes"), I can't keep from muting the open G string, which doesn't sound as good as when the open G is droning. As hard as I try, my middle finger keeps muting the G string as I slide the chord to the G# minor Major 7 (4th fret) and then the C minor (8th fret). :(

If it's not an issue with the way you're playing, it could be a nut slot issue. You could also try dampening the strings behind the nut and see if that resolves the issue. Some guitars just get weird resonance from behind the nut.
