Hi, I'm new to the Fender forums - I've been looking at a 2010 Deluxe Strat and noticed the serial number looked a bit odd, it starts with a 10 (no letters) which according to the Fender website relates to a limited batch of serial numbers from 2010 so that appears to check out, however the 10 is supposed to be followed by 7 digits but the one on this guitar is only followed by 6 digits. Serial No is 10 050659. Is this cause for concern? The seller showed me a quick glance at his receipt from when he bought it 2nd hand about 4 years ago.

Any advice would be much appreciated, many thanks.

To every serial number rule Fender has, there is an exception
There are more than yours with the serial "10" + six digits, so that alone won't make it fake.

Email Fender Consumer Relations with the serial to get their confirmation.

There's nothing to be worried about.
The serial number looks to be in order.
I bought my American Deluxe in 2012, and its serial number is 11*****2, which ties my guitar into being made any time from April 1st 2011 to March 31st 2012.

Fender serial numbers are a funny thing. They can be a year behind on many guitars. My '04 50th Anniversary Strat I purchased in '04 has a '03 serial number. My Clapton Strat I ordered in January '01, and received in February '01, has a 2000 serial number.

Thanks for the responses guys, appreciate it. I've emailed Fender consumer relations earlier and have also now found this thread from 2010 where it's discussed and there's a pic there of another US strat with a serial number in the same format (10+ 6 digits) http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?t=40555

Now that's funny - I felt I remembered this, but didn't dare to trust my memory.
Notice the difference (might have been a typing error when Fender updated the web pages; "several/seven"....):
Quote:
Serial numbers that begins with 10, followed by a space and then several other digits. This system was quickly replaced by a second convention, although instruments bearing these designations were produced for a few months in late 2009 and early 2010
(from the forum link Steveww posted)

Quote:
A new serial numbering scheme was adopted toward the end of 2009 using the number “10” as a prefix, followed by a space, followed by seven digits.

It's legit; I believe that Fender's serial number page has a typo where it says this format was "10" plus 7 digits. I've never seen one of these with 10 + 7 digits, only 10 + 6 digits. As others have said this format was only used for roughly January-March 2010; they moved on to the "US" + "2 digits for the year" + "6 digits for the unique serial number" format by about April 2010.

Surely your s/n begins with the letters "I" and "O". The O is certainly different to the zeros.

The S/N starts with 10

To quote from the support pages ....

Quote:
A new serial numbering scheme was adopted toward the end of 2009 using the number “10” as a prefix, followed by a space, followed by seven digits. The “10” prefix was designed to identify the first year of the second decade of the new millennium, and while it appears on the instrument decals, it was not captured in Fender’s operating system. Only the seven-digit suffixes were actually entered into the database. These serial numbers did not identify the country of origin in the body of the number. Instead, the instrument's country of origin appears on the decal on the back of the headstock, near the serial number.

This new numbering scheme was short-lived and was replaced only a few months later by an improved scheme that identifies an instrument’s country of origin and year of manufacture in the body of the serial number.

This new scheme uses the letters “US” as a prefix to designate an instrument made in the United States, followed by an eight-digit number. The first two digits of the number identify the year of manufacture, (10 for 2010, 11 for 2011, etc.). The following six digits are the unit identifier, although it should be noted that these final six numbers are not sequential and do not provide any other identification information about the instrument. This new scheme is now used on the majority of U.S.-made Fender instruments, with exceptions including the American Vintage series and certain special-run instruments.

SERIAL NUMBERS PRODUCTION DATES
“10” prefix followed by a space and seven digits (late 2009 through March 2010)
US10 + 6 digits (beginning in about March 2010)
V + 5 or 6 digits (American Vintage Series except ’52 Telecaster, which uses a five-digit number stamped into the bridge plate)
2010

(for American Vintage series, check neck date for specific year)
US11 + 6 digits
V + 5 or 6 digits (American Vintage Series except ’52 Telecaster, which uses a five-digit number stamped into the bridge plate)
2011

(for American Vintage series, check neck date for specific year)
US12 + 6 digits
V + 5 or 6 digits (American Vintage Series except ’52 Telecaster, which uses a five-digit number stamped into the bridge plate)
2012

(for American Vintage series, check neck date for specific year)

Having a dig around finds other reference points

I received an e-mail back from Fender who confirms that the serial number is genuine and also confirming the model, colour and configuration of the guitar. Quite impressed, someone else bought the guitar now though lol
