I just bought a 1997 American Stratocaster on eBay. Lovely Daphne Blue color, but the seller "forgot" to mention that it has a pair of 1/2-inch-long hairline cracks in the finish coming out from each corner of the neck pocket. I see this problem on a LOT on Strats, and my question is: since these are so common, will they affect the resale value of this guitar? There's no problem with the neck/body joint, so what causes these things? Thanks for your comments. - Michael

Any cracks in the finish will affect value in my mind. When I am in the music shop and I see a guitar thats on display and it has any damage at all on it and I will negotiate a price if I want to buy it. Also If I were to buy one off of ebay and finsih cracks were not mentioned I would be upset.

I can see tension on the neck creating this over time. Considering it's only in the finish i really don't see it being a problem. Something that would decrease it's value would be re-finishing it. The present re-sale value might be affected but in the long run i wouldn't be to worried. I've seen some pretty old beat up guitars get top dollars.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as it's only the finish. Enjoy it and don't worry about resale value. It'll take a long time for it appreciate anyway. These guitars were machine made and just bolted together by the thousands. I have an original 72 Strat and never worried about resale value, I just enjoy the guitar dings and all.

Cracks coming out of both corners of the neck pocket suggest the guitar has had a hefty wack at some time putting stress on the neck joint. Might the wood be damaged beneath the finish? No way to know.

You wouldn't want to buy a guitar with stress marks like that showing. But since you already have it, just treat it gently. Be kind to that Strat and it'll be kind to you.

Hello Trapdoorspider,

I've seen the finish cracks on strats and teles
doesn't really bother me, but I do use it as a
bargaining chip,

A finish crack is not a deal breaker
if I really like the guitar.

Cheers.
