Hi all. I'm a new member and this my first post. I have a 1986 Strat, '62 reissue in Fiesta Red. It's undoubtedly an '86 - all the stampings on the pots, neck etc confirm this, together with original case, tags and booklet. My problem is with the paint. It appears to have been refinished in that the neck pocket is oversprayed - but the paint finish is checked with crack lines and appears 'old'. I've had the guitar 10 years and it had check marks on when I bought it. A bit of paint scraping in the neck pocket shows white underneath (primer?). Could it be that this was done by Fender as a factory refin? Anyone heard of this? It's a puzzle - everything about the guitar says 'original'. Any help gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Pics, please.
Of the whole guitar from different angles, plus details from everywhere, plus gut shots of the neck heel & neck pocket & under the pickguard. That way someone in the forum can give you an answer.
Here's how: Nutter's Quick Start Guide

Pics for sure are needed. But Fenders factory production schedule has in the past driven them to refin a guitar body while still in production to meet demand. It could most certainly be a refined Olympic White that the factory "Reshot" to fill an order for Fiesta Red.

First let me say congrats on a hell of a guitar! You have one of the earliest run of AVRI's to come out of Corona which didn't open until the very end of 85. It is very possible that your guitars body was indeed refinished from White to Fiesta Red at the Corona plant. The Standard color that was available on the 62 reissues built at Fullerton from 82-84 was 3- color Sunburst. But custom colors were offered- Fiesta Red- Black- Lake Placid Blue- Vintage White- and Candy Apple Red. But it is estimated that during this period only 5%-7% of all guitars built during this period were actually finished in one of these custom colors. It is also pretty common knowledge that when they opened the Corona factory they took bodies, necks, bridges, tuners and just about anything not nailed down with them. This is a great site on these guitars (a lot of great info) and these guys are experts on these models and I am sure you could get some questions you have answered http://www.fenderreissue.com Good luck and I hope things workout in your favor! I would love to own that baby- one of myall time favorite colors - my birth year lol- and truly one of the most special Strats of the modern era!

Thanks very much for your replies. I've attempted to upload some photos. If this works I'll try to do some more. Th actual paint on the guitar is lighter in shade than the pics show - must be the lighting/my camera.
Since I photo'd the neck pocket I've scraped away some paint and it shows a layer of white, as on the worn edge of the body pic.
Thanks

Oh my oh my, isn't she pretty...

Here's my tuppence - and (a) I don't claim to be an expert, plus (b) I have no other basis on these than some experience and gut feeling.
I believe that's not a factory refinish. That crackling (which, BTW, I like) may have occurred as the nitro reacted to the new top coat (which may be nitro, too - do the acetone test if you want to).

But oh my oh my, isn't she pretty...

Thanks for that. I'll investigate further! In the meantime here are a couple more pics - next to my Torino Red '89 Clapton Strat in an attempt to show the colour of the '86 AVRI. I'm sure about the EC Strat - had it from new!

Here is my take on this. I don't think it was refinished. Although the paint in the neck pocket is NOT normal. I own an '82 '57 Vintage Reissue (as Fender called them in those days) and it has NO color in the neck pocket, but does have a bit of the white (Which is an undercoating). Mine is two tone sunburst but that should make no difference in production techniques. IIRC they screwed a handle into the neck pocket to spray the bodies so there shouldn't be any paint there. I suspect that Corona was still getting it production techniques down during this time and may have used a different spraying method?

As for the finish cracking, I have seen many Nitro finishes do this due to heat and cold changes, and not reaction to an undercoat or a refin.

I think you have a fine guitar that is as it came from the factory...albeit with the wear and tear of the years of playing it has seen. Enjoy your guitar and if I were you, I wouldn't lose any sleep over whether it was refinished, it would only matter if decide to sell it and want to list it as all original.

FWIW

Here's another RI from 1986: joesguitarshop

Edit: (To clarify my previous post) It is characteristic for nitro to crack, but it's not very common to see such uniform crack lines as in the OP's guitar.

Thanks to all you guys who have taken the time and interest to answer my questions - I really appreciate it! I have to (shamefully) admit that I had thought of selling it, simply on the basis that I haven't played it seriously in a while. You might have worked out that I'm in the UK - when I tried to check out any similar guitars for sale or recently sold over here I started to realise that basically there weren't any. Then I started to look closer at the history and got really interested. Your comments have made me realise that this is a lovely instrument and a significant one too. We won't be parting company - it will be staying on my wall! Oh - and I'll be playing it much more too!

I don't think it's refinished either. The paint in the neck pocket could be because it was finished on a turntable, the way early Fenders were.

The first post that has pictures (the third picture,) has an inspection sticker with J. Andrade's name. He was a project manager (maybe still is,) for fender. This leads me to believe this is a factory finish.

The checking patterns can vary a lot, especially depending on exposure to cold.

Enjoy it, seems a real gem.

Well I have no real idea but it is a strange job in the neck pocket and the hang tag model number ends in a 5.
May be a coincidence but that is an in house code for Olympic White.
Just my two cents worth! :D
