Hello,

I'm currently looking at a second hand MX MIM FSR strat with a maple neck.

The guitar has had the humbuckers switched out for vintage noiseless pickups, as well as the entire circuitry that has been replaced, and it has got locking tuners installed.

The guitar is in mint condition, and the seller is asking €400 for it.

Meanwhile a friend has a US standard strat for sale for €1000.

How much do you guys reckon modified MIM strats are worth? I don't know whether I am about to do a spectacular deal or not.

Cheers!

It's been my experience that upgrades to a guitar more often than not, decrease the value.

I'd estimate the value at $50-$100 less than the asking price.

The U.S. standard is overpriced as a used guitar in my opinion also. Depending on condition I'd guess more like $650-$800.

The price level of Fenders is highly dependant on the region where one lives.

In the US, 400€ (~500$) is high for a modded MIM, in most parts of Europe it's nothing out of the ordinary - although it probably is the asking price, with room for some cosmetic bargaining.
Same goes for that MIA Strat, 1000€ (1240$); that's what the sellers usually ask for AmStandards.

Not so long ago there have been posts of the price level in Australia (more than 1.5 times Europe prices) and South America (almost 3 times)...

Well I've decided to go through with it, I'm hoping to pick it up this Friday or Saturday. Will have a look whether it is in the condition it was described as, but in the photos of it it looks absolutely fantastic with that special run sunburst and the maple neck.

Next thing would probably to finally upgrade my '93 MIM black strat after nearly 10 years of being stock. There's just no punch in the pick-ups, and I've been thinking about getting a set of custom shop '69 s for it.

If parts have been changed, it's not mint. If the vinyl on the pickguard has been removed, it's not mint. Heck, if it has seen half an hour of playing, it's not mint.

And changing parts, even to better parts, generally reduces the value. At that point, it loses any intrinsic value as a guitar, and the value becomes the combined value of various used parts.
If by MX you meant MMX, i.e. 2010, then the price would be high for the US market, but probably about par for Europe. If it had been original, that is.

The price trends in my area on used guitars (private owner to private buyer) would be right around $800.00 (U.S.) for the American Standard, and $400.00 to $450.00 (U.S.) for the MIM.

Buyers (for the most part) in my area, myself included, do not care how much you spent to "modify" the guitar. Price is set based on the fact that the equipment is used, and what one could pay for the same guitar new.

Of course condition, and collectable value are factored in on specialty and vintage guitars.

You are right with the fact that the guitar has been modded so it can't be considered mint. But I have bought quite a few guitars where the vinyl was taken off the pickguard and the guitar was indeed in mint condition. You can have a guy buy a new guitar take the vinyl off play it a half hour without putting a mark on it and put it in his closet for 10 years-it would be listed as mint if he knew what he was doing. Someone who buys a guitar and leaves the hang tags on and doesn't even take it out of the case can put it up as in NOS condition. How many guitars in a Guitar center get played 2 or 3 times daily and are sold as new just because it is in a store?

The OP is correct in the fact that US built guitars are more expensive across the pond and the pricess guys pay in Australia is downright insane. Though I don't own a MIM Fender they have been building them their 25 years now and they have come a long way. I think with the prices given everything is correct and go with what feels and sounds better to you. The only issue would be resale as any guitar modded is going to take a hit. If you play your guitars and don't flip them every year it doesn't matter, if the guitar is going to be with you for a few years.
