Just checking if there is any difference between Tx Special & Custom shop TX special pickups or if they both are the same. Are CS pickups better than the regular American ones? I'm looking for some good pickups that have good sustain & not too much 'dirt' or too much crunchy sound on it.Any recomendations?

Texas Specials are all the same. I have a set of them in one of my Strats. They have plenty of honk to them. Might be a bit too hot for what you're looking for. I would recommend either the 57/62 Vintage pickups or the Fat 50's.

Thanks. How about the CS 54 or 69 pups? Are CS pickups any different from the regular ones?

57/62 will give you that typical strat tone and quack.
The 69s are quite mellow and the 54s to me seem a little more on the treble side.
The custom shop pickups have a fibre bobbin while most std pickups have plastic.
They have cloth wiring rather than plastic.
On some the middle are RWRP and on others like the 69 set they are not.
There are subtle variations in how pickups sound :D

Thanks a lot for giving me some clarity on deciding.I guess I would go for the 57/62. Is there a custom shop 57/62 available as I see some videos on youtube ,or is it just a CS guitar with a 57/62?

69's and a good fuzz pedal into a tube amp = hendrix heaven. 57/62 and a treble booster into a tube amp = Rory Gallagher (minus both of those guys technique).got them in my strats, both work for me. i LOVE the 60's sounds, it dosen't sound like today's crap.

The 57/62 is not a custom shop pickup per se but does have a fibre bobbin and cloth wire.
In some strats with them pre installed you may get a RWRP middle that may not be present in a standard set.
They have a very heavy bevelled pickup pole.
I have read that the earlier sets were different than the ones available today.
You could always buy a 57/62 and a 69 and try them and of course they are not the only options.
I have had both and was suprised to find how stratty the 57/62s were in positions 2 and 4. :D

After looking at some videos I think I will go for the fat 50s for the bass depth it gives. Are they too crunchy or as clean as the 57/62? DOn't want to miss out on the lows.

Another popular pickup.
There are plenty of current model strats with the 50s so you should be able to try before you buy! :D

Each set is different, both can do cleans very well, but the Fat '50s are a bit more versatile for me. I have owned the Fat '50s, CS '54s, '57/62 (older style and newer with the RWRP middle), Texas Specials, and each can be fantastic depending on your style, genre and amp.

For example, the CS '54s (60th Ann Comm Strat) sound wonderful on a '68 Bassman, great full sounding, tight, beefy cleans with plenty of sparkle, and rich, full breakup when pushed (hard to get breakup on the Bassman). The Fat '50s (2012 AM Std) sound perfect on a '65 DRRI, with excellent harmonics, good tight low-end when clean, and very smooth, crisp breakup when pushed. The Fat '50s also sound better than the CS '54s on a variety of amps, especially higher gain amps such as MB or Blackstar. These two pup examples work for me, my amps and style, so if you are different (given), you might achieve slightly different results, so try out as many combinations as you can before deciding.

If I had to pick only one of the above sets, it would be the Fat '50s, due to their ability to cover more territory/amps than the others.

Thank goodness I don't have to choose, because each different type of pup has it's specialty and matches well with certain styles and certain amps.

Don't forget you can always adjust the pickups lower if you think they are "too hot".
I prefer to keep my pups as low as possible as the tone sounds cleaner/clearer to me.
I set them to get proper output level, not too high as I like to keep sustain as much as possible. I have boost/gain/distortion pedals for when I need a hotter tone, as I'd rather clean boost the guitar signal rather than raising the pups possible losing sustain and getting a muddier tone.

The nice thing with HB pups is that I can lower the pups to get a solid clear tone and then adjust the pole pieces to even out string volume.
It's surprising how many HB players never adjust the poles, they just raise or lower the pup and that's it.
There is a good bit of tone and volume tuning that can be done by adjusting the poles.
Strat singles have staggered poles to begin with but can't be adjusted, and most aftermarket singles can't be adjusted either.
There are some singles that have adjustable poles, but I haven't tried any.

My Strat has Lace Sensors, which I happen to like, but they don't even have poles so all I can do is raise or lower the pup height.

I have the Texas Specials for my Tele and they can be setup to be very clean, I get some sparkling jazz tone out of them, but I can get some grit if needed. If you are looking for really clean I love the Fender Custom Shop nocasters, excellent pu at a great price.

Will noncasers work for Strats?

did a Warmoth build and used Fat 50's. I already own an SRV Strat.
I can tell the FFs are in the same vein as TS pups. Like TS but a bit mellower and the biggest dif is the bridge pup in which the FF is much better than the TS IMO. No shrillness at all.
Like TS pups the FFs sound the best if they are set up low into the pick guard.

I would think you could put the nocasters in a strat if you had it routed properly with the right pickguard, not sure. I guess if you wanted to have a really good pickup selection you could go with Alnico III in the neck (which is what the nocasters are) a Alnico II (like the SD Alnico II Pro) in the middle and the Alnico V Texas Special in the Bridge, my guess is that would be a very formidable and versatile way to go. I am sure more people have written more and know more than I do on that but that sounds like a great setup. My favorite strat setup is the SD Twang Banger (Ironically an Alnico II) in the bridge and the Alnico II pro in the neck and middle positions. Great twangy blues, country and Jazz tones.
