Which would be more appropriate for modern country, and 80s classic rock? A fender stratocaster hss, or a gibson les paul les plus? Feel free to state your opinions! Thanks

When it comes down to brass tacks... both cut it. Personally I feel an HSH Strat gets the best of both worlds... twang in the midlle with the buckers in two potential lead positions w bridge and neck... and hotter quack tone sounds if it's wired regular 5 way switch fashion.

It all depends on what you are playing. A lot of it comes down to the actual player. Strats and Teles are pretty standard fair for country, but Les Paul have been used in the past.

I agree, a Tele with a humbucker in the neck pos is a fine choice. I use a this combonation with my Tele. I get some really great tones with when I use both pickups.

A lot of the "New Country" guys are rocking it in high gain territory... something to consider... one bucker is going to give you one usable pup... with the exception of the quack tone (and that's only if the middle pup on an hss is reverse wound... which I haven't noticed as a stock option with hss config).
Something to consider... do you want one usable pup for high gain applications... or two like the Les Paul's or HSH config Stratocaster's will offer with two humbuckers.

*Less Paul = 3 usable positions w/ tone/volume knob available for added happiness
*HSH Strat - 4 usable posiytions w/ tone/volume knob available for added happiness

I was looking at the hsh and it sounded a little muddy. Could that just be the amp? What about a fender modern player, it has a humbucker as well as coil splitting!?

All depends on what you like really.

A Strat with HB's has the gain to compete with an LP but will still have some of that Strat tone as it's not a mahogany body with a maple top.
LP's aren't really known for the "country" tone as they don't have that brightness and twang that one can get from a single coil Strat or Tele.
LP's have a darker tone more like what you hear in "Southern Rock".

A Tele with an HB and single coil can be versatile guitar that can give you nice thick bite for hard rock and some brighter country twang.
A Strat with an HSS setup can give you some of that as well.

For me, there is a BIG different in how these guitars play and feel and that's very important. I love the sounds from an LP for harder rock tones and for gritty blues, but I don't like how the necks feel and access to the upper frets sucks for my hands.
I am NOT a Gibson LP player even with the slim-taper neck. LP's feel odd to me.
A Strat feels much better to my hands and I love the neck profile.
For that LP tone I prefer "Super Strat" type guitars like my Schecter C1.
It has a mahogany body with a maple top and neck through body design with dual HB's. It gives any LP a run for it's money in heavy tone, but it also has a great neck and great upper fret access compared to an LP.

I bought a new Gibson ES335 about a month ago and I love this guitar.
It has a nice brightness like my Strat but also has a nice thick tone from it's dual HB's. The neck shape and feel is sublime, excellent, and the upper fret access is super nice more like my Strat.
It's a very versatile guitar tonally as it's a dual HB but has excellent brightness due to it's maple body and top design.
I can go hard rock, blues, and country depending on the amp and it's settings, just have watch and listen for any hum and feedback if you really crank the volume as it's a semi-hollow guitar, but man what a great tone machine it is.

Happy hunting for your new guitar. :)

I'd opt for the Strat SSS. It can handle almost anything with the SSS pickups. LP's can be a "one trick pony". You would almost have to put P90's in the LP for a country kind of tone.

This is exactly the reason I have both a strat (HSH) and a Les Paul. I tend to cover a lot of different genre's and big leaps like modern country to classic rock really need different guitars in order to sound right. This is also the reason I have a 335 because in order to really get a nice jazz tone or smooth country (Chet Atkins) sound you either need a 335 or a Gretsch.

One other tip I've implemented because of this range of genre's and various guitars is to have multiple wireless transmitters, one for each guitar attached to the guitar strap, going to a single receiver. Then when I have to transition between guitars during a show it's a simple matter of turning off the transmitter on one guitar and turning on the transmitter for the next guitar.

Not all the time. You will find it hard to get real country twang from a couple of Hot HB's in an LP for instance, or Surf guitar tones even with coil splitting... Metal - a Strat can do exactly what the OP asked.

That said, you really need both - a single coil and an HB equiped guitar to do it right IMO.

LP's are very versatile guitars.

It's apples and oranges, really. Singles coils and HBs each have their own character.
