Hi,

Guitar Guitar, Andertons and GAK all have Mexican Standard Strats in stock at £419, they should be the same spec as the one you posted, but with a gloss finish instead of the satin.

I bought mine from GAK, but I have bought online and instore with all three of them in the past.

Some people say that the Mexican Standards can be a bit patchy in quality, but I have two a strat that was the first one I pulled off the wall, which blew away the LTDs and Yamahas I was also looking at and a Tele that I took in part ex against an American Standard Tele, both are great and set up better than some American Standards I have owned.

Try a few locally pretty much everyone stocks them and see if you get on with them, you can always tell your local store that you can get one online for £419 and see if they will price match.

Ian

Such a confusing thread...so, why were you looking at the Modern Player Stratocaster, if the HSH pickup configuration wasn't more of a factor in your decision making?

Everyone kept screaming MIM!!! Go MIM!!! And, that is the direction you turned. Yes....you CAN go that direction, but they don't offer an HSH guitar manufactured in Mexico...atleast not stock, and atleast not that I have ever seen. Or solid Mahogany as far as that goes.

I came across this thread on a "search" for the Modern Player....because I AM interested in the HSH configuration. But all this particular thread did was annoy me. I'm with Minnesotastrats on this one!

China really doesn't produce terrible instruments, but that's also relative case-by-case. Feel is definitely important, but you want to be happy with your instrument overall. I personally would choose a Strat over an Ibanez anyday, but the flatter fretboard radius on Ibanez guitars is very handy if you want to learn to play fast.
My personal recommendation, buy a second hand MIM strat and just upgrade the $@!& out of it and don't let the neck finish deter you. If you find a guitar you really like that has a glossy neck, take some finer grit sandpaper around 3 or 400 and gently sand the playing areas of the neck. I recommend painters tape to block off the parts you don't want to accidentally sand. You don't want to remove a lot of material just gently sand the neck, it'll be ten times faster than glossy. In a few months of regular play, the friction of your hands will buff the neck back to a shine, just gently hit it with the paper again.
And if you want to take it to the extreme, use a coarser sandpaper to bring it down to the wood, a lot of professional players do this.

Here's the best part: It's your first guitar, do whatever the hell you want to it and F**K what anyone else thinks.

And so JMR.... What did you get?

It really annoys me when people ask a load of questions and then don't have the courtesy to tell people, who have given of their time, what the conclusion was.

Apparently, according to a "What amp should I buy for a Strat" a MIM Strat was the conclusion.

I'll be fascinated to see the inevitable "What stomp box should I buy" thread to find out what amp was purchased.

I just find that rude.

Go for the Strat. Nothing beats the beauty, classy look, and flexibility of a Fender Strat.

I agree and believe that is what the OP did...although I have only come to that conclusion based on another thread which the OP raised about amplifier choice.
