The pure nickel sets do sound a bit warmer than the nickel wound sets. Of course this only applies to the wound strings, the plain strings are steel on either set.

I used nothing but D'Addario's for 20 odd years and then had a period where they felt like they changed something and have never felt the same to me. I switched to Elixers the last 4 years and that was it, as they feel the best under my fingers and I get a lot more milage out of them.
