I was just curios. I want to buy a brand new strat and I really got enthusiastic about the SRV strat. Is buying a new SRV strat worth it ? A dealer close to my country is offering a brand new one for 2330 $!(Really want a brand new one so a second hand is not an option.)
Are there any other strats that can offer the SRV tone much like the signature model?
Are there other strats around 2300$ that can offer more in terms of quality?

Sounds like you can't try it out. I tried one 10 years ago at the store and really liked it but had just bought an EC Strat. One thing I noticed was the neck was really comfortable and much slimmer than I expected. It was a well made guitar, and I'll vote yes buy it.

Any Strat will get the SRV tone. It's in the gear you use with it, and the playing.

I would not feel comfortable purchasing a guitar that I had not played myself before I bought it.

As to the sound: tone, sustain and the whole ball of wax.

A.
1. You could purchase a regular 3-color-sunburst Strat with rosewood finger board.
2. Add some CS Texas Special pups.
3. purchase a left handed trem.

Check out the Road Worn '60s Strat.

http://www.fender.com/guitars/stratocas ... -sunburst/

B. Purchase a new SRV Strat for about $1,600 from Guitar Center.

C. Purchase a used SRV for about $1,000 - $1,200.

For the first option a 3-ply 8-hole black pickguard and gold hardware are mandatory. You can put the SRV stickers on the guard if desired.

Big +1 to that.

Here's SRV, on a Squier:

Sorry but I have to say, for me.. $2,300 for a strat is just way too much dough.

You're paying for the "Signature Artist" thing and really not much more other than a few specs that make it what it is. (which, you'd have to be extremely anal to know or care a lot about the differences)

if you want to buy new, Just take a look at the new American standards, all are loaded with Custom Shop Fat 50's, these are great pickups. I picked one up in March of this year.. I love it.

I have another Strat with Texas Specials (which is what the SRV strat comes with)
the Fat 50s get pretty close. In fact, I like the bridge pup from the Fat 50s more than the Texas Specials. (Smoother to my ears)

and as said already honestly any strat will get you in the ballpark with that sound you've got in your head. Just set your tone for some nastiness, and get on the neck pickup and dig in hard...

Well in my opinion $2,300 USD is not all that much for an instrument, for instance, one could buy a bottom of the barrel Bassoon for about $3,000 USD or one could get a quality Bassoon for $25,000 USD , in retrospect $2,300 for a Guitars is a cheap investment for a for a quality instrument

no, I hear ya quite true... Pricing Baby Grand Pianos can bring you down to earth pretty fast too..

But,, here's where I just offer ( and not trying to be snarky) how I'd see it..

a slab of wood with a bolt on neck, and electronics loaded on a piece of plastic and screwed to a body... verses, say a Les Paul with that requires quite a bit more handy work,
Seems to me $2,300 is an awful load of cash for a strat...

(and yea,, it's a lot for a Les Paul too!! :) )

but hey if folks are happy dropping $2k on a strat... The world is their oyster!

Strats are great guitars, I love them

I have a hard time going over 2k for almost any guitar actually..

It is when it's my 2.3k, and I'm not buying a bassoon. Which in itself, has a lot smaller market demand that a guitar.

$2,300 buys a basic Am Std here. Which, apart from some different pickups and decals, is what the SRV is. US buyers can get same for a lot less.

It's no different in the UK.
However, I would not consider buying a new Fender guitar outside of the official channels - having a local distributor does have its benefits.
Try getting a warranty repair done if you've gone to the grey side ....

You need to remember that some countries charge way more for a guitar than they do in the USA. Here in Canada we pay a premium even though we are right next door. And don't get me started on the US Exchange rate which has been going up lately. (I paid a 38% difference on a PCM80)

Australians are screwed in the butt when it comes to guitars - be glad you don't live there.
Not only is there no supply, the prices are way out to lunch.

I think SRV's are (don't quote me) $1700 in a store - none in town right now though.

Having played one, and having a Standard and an EC to compare it to, it's high quality and IMHO worth the extra bucks compared to a Std.

I think you need to decide for yourself if you want to pay the price. It's your money, you worked hard for it and you can spend it any way you like. Hard to get around the prices in your area.

If you get a bargain on a used guitar - that's equally good. I will buy used if I can try it out otherwise its from a dealer so I can return it if it's faulty.

I had a SRV and they are great guitars. If you cant try a new one before you buy it , make sure the store has a good return policy. 1600 new is the going rate in the US. You could buy a regular strat and put Texas Specials in it with the appropriate electronics, gold plated vintage tuners and gold plated trem and saddles, but if you go with a lefty you will have to rout the body to accept the lefty and fill in the gap left from the righty (like SRV did) I am pretty sure. One of the nicest things about the SRV that I liked was the neck. Tall frets , 12" radius and a nice comfy profile.

That 2300$ (1900€) is the going rate in Continental Europe (the biggest store is Thomann, I believe - at least it's usually used as the price reference). Checked a couple of largest UK online stores, they go to 2500+$.

To clarify a bit:
On my post above, I was not trying to tell anybody how to spend their money.
Just trying to make a point, that one doesn't become SRV by buying a signature model, and that one can sound like SRV without one.

Well I guess it OK to say you should be happy your not investing in a quality piano which has a fair market demand let see a Quality Steinway & Sons starts At about $7,000 and can go to at least $160,000 for a grand ( that's how much the one on stage where I work cost ) I still think guitars are a cheep investment, Harmonicas are even a cheaper investment, but quality one cost about $30.00 USD
