Hi guys,

I am going to upgrade my tuner and am having some difficulties in picking one that is better suited for me.

Im using an ash body with maple neck/maple fretboard, Fender LSR roller nut and a Wilkinson bridge. Style of playing is blues and classic rock. What im looking for is tuning stability (wont go out of tune with heavy blues bends) i tend to use gauge .010 & .011 strings.

Your feedback and experience is appriciated.

Thanks guys.

Sperzel's are great tuners, but IMHO they are overkill. I played lots of blues and classic rock on a couple Strats with the vintage kluson style tuners and never had any issues.

Before you change out your tuners, make sure your nut is good, your trem is set up correctly, and the strings don't have too many extra wraps on em when you change strings... then if you are having tuning issues try those Fender tuners that come stock on the Eric Johnson model, seem to work well for him.

FWIW

T2Stratman thanks for the reply mate,

actually my original neck broke and have a new replacement neck and have good deal on both the tuner type for the same price.

just wondering which one i should go for. i agree that the locking tuners might look like overkill and the fender ones will look like the way it was meant to look like (a good old fashioned american vintage strat)

i guess its more of a bang for buck/practical application decision call now.

Well considering that, then just go with the Fender Tuners and be done with it.

Why not fit the Gotoh vintage locking tuners with adjustable post height?
That way you get the restringing advantages of the locking tuners and the looks of the original Klusons (almost).

Stratmangler2 currently the only available options are the 2 that are stated above.

I dont live in the US and its hard & rather expansive to get part such as these in my country.

I have had both assuming you are talking tuners with the little knob on the back that locks the string in and both seemed ok.
Makes string changes pretty easy too.
Cannot remember if the sperzels were a direct replacement for standard fender tuners though. I know the schallers are and the ping.
May pay to check that in case the back mounting lugs and holes are different.
I could be way off but I seem to remember the sperzels having one pin whereas the schallers have the standard two assuming you get the correct ones.
I presume you are using std tuners and not vintage otherwise its not worth the hassle.
Those Goto vintage lockers are butt ugly IMHO :D

Aesthetically... I prefer standard Fender tuners... never liked the lockers... yes, does makes string changes faster/easier but... can't stand what they look like.

Fender tuners work just fine... never had problems with them slipping... so long as you wind those bad boys proper... no problems.

If you don't have a prob w/ how the lockers look... go for it... They do make string changes a breeze

They also make tuning a tad easier, as you can tune down to the correct tuning, not past it and then back up again as is standard practice on regular tuners, due to the stretch. With less than a turn of string around the pole, there's no stretch to pick up.

But both work well (and to cuss in the church, so does Tronical tuners...), so neither is wrong or bad!

Little late to the party on this I have Sperzels on my DPS Strat and love em. Easy tuning for sure.

I've put locking tuners on every Strat and Tele I've owned since the early '90s when I first learned about them. And all future guitars I own will have 'em one way or another!! They make string changes a lot easier PERIOD!! But like so many other aspects of guitar/amp ownership, it is all owner preference and opinion. Only you know what's best for you.

Great choice.
I prefer the Fender/Schaller locking tuners.
These came on my '91 Strat Plus Dlx and I've loved them ever since.
Never tried the Sperzel's and Fender did use those on some Strats as OEM.
My preference would be Grover Roto-Grip tuners, but Grover doesn't make a tuner for the Strat that doesn't have a set screw. I could use them but I don't want to drill any holes. I could use them without the set screw but then it would look odd.
The Schallers work great so no problems.

My Strat has the Wilkinson roller nut. It's not as good as the LSR but nicer than not having a roller nut. I've had my Strat since 1991 and the nut wasn't "rolling" as it should so I did a great cleaning of the nut using some nut sauce/lube along with each slot's string to work the roller. I used the old strings I took off, ran each string into it's slot, applied lube and just pulled the string up and down to work the roller.
It worked great to free up the nut and tuning stability has been great.

I LOVE locking tuners as they help keep tune especially with a Strats trem, and string changes are a breeze, pull the string through, hold it tight and lock it down, done.
No string wrapping and waiting for the string to settle on the post before tuning stability gets right. Tuning stability happens much more quickly with locking tuners.
