Hi!

Just got my second Classic 50's strat and I have one also from way back in 1994. They're kind of noisy, aren't they? You know, the regular stuff, touching the strings quiet, releasing the strings noisy.

I have this on ALL my guitars both Gibsons and all of my Fenders. But my Classic 50's are the worst, even though I installed humbuckers in the bridge.

The one that is most quiet is my brand new Fender Strat Standard 2014. It's almost dead quiet. Why is that?

Are the 50's Classic supposed to be...well, vintage and thus more noisy using older kind of wiring and the new standard is shielded?

Or are all my guitars just broken lol?

Bad ground connexion

Bad ground connexion in the guitar ( if amp is OK , wall outlet ground OK , are they ? ) or you guitar cord is bad.

So ALL of my 5 guitars have various degrees of bad ground connection...whatever that is?

Are all of ya'lls guitars dead quiet when you connect it to a high gain source/amp?

Gain = Noise. Buckers will be way more quiet than single coils any day... but yeah... you're going to hear some noise w/ high gain
Enjoy :D

+1

Improper shielding, poor soldering and electrical interferences from light exposure and other electronic devices are also important factors for a pickup - noiseless or not - to buzz.

So is this normal or not? As I said, I play with high gain.

From my experience the single coils have actually been more quiet than the humbuckers. My new 2014 standard strat with the seymour duncan SSL-4 is the most quiet of them all. Even more quiet than my Gibson Junior with the P90 and my classic 50's strats with humbuckers. Maybe it's just that the new standard Fenders are built better?

Using a mid boost circuit with regular single-coils may increase the hum. Stacked hum-cancelers and full-sized humbuckers are recommended. Otherwise slap in a Suhr silent single-coil backplate or drop an internal dummy coil beneath the pickguard to eliminate the buzz.

But the thing is I get this even with my Gibson Les Paul Junior with the stock P90. I understand that it must be normal since all of my guitars have hum when playing with high gain, but some are just too much, like my 50's classic strats even with humbuckers installed in them. I guess they must have vintage wires and bad shielding or something to replicate the...well 50's classic??

P90 have more output than Strat single coil.

Vintage wire are normal wire with vintage look , work like modern wire not better not worst.

Modern Strat have a shielded pickgard , this may help .The Classic 50 , I don't know .

It is normal...to a point. If it is too much for your high gain playing get a couple roles of shielding tape and line your body and underside of your pickguards. This should help cut down a good portion, but you will never get rid of all the noise.

Alright, so basically what it comes down to is how good or bad the guitar is shielded, not usually cause by bad soldering, loose wires and so on? Because I would find it hard to believe that all of my guitars would have faulty installations. But on my Fender 50's strat there is definitely something strange going on. I always expect hum and noise to some extent, like you say it's hard to get rid of when playing with high gain, but this is too much compared to my other guitars. I will look into it.

In my opinion your guitars are probably normal , some have higher output , sensitivity .

Only a qualified tech can say.

Problem is to use a high gain amp input

Hmmmm... sounds like your buckers on the 50's strat may be microphonic... what type of pups you got in that one?
If they're lower end pups... there's a good chance they're not pottted... which will make them microphonic.... which will create a howling, booming, screetching mess at high gain volumes.
