I did some research on Google and on this forum. I've seen people say Fender Pings on the Mexico Standards are 16:1, but I've seen 18:1 too. Not sure wherein the truth lies.

Many moons ago I bought a set of these in black:

Are you of the opinion that these would be worse, about the same, or better than the standard Mexi Ping tuners? I have no qualms with drilling holes in my headstock I just want to make sure I have the best of my available options until my broke $@! can afford a set of Schaller lockers.

Thanks!

Why do you want to change the tuners out?
The Pings are OK and the Grovers no better.

If you've got tuning stability issues there are areas that need addressing before you start swapping out parts.

It's vital that the nut does not snag strings on bends or tremolo movement.
I have a roller nut on my Am Deluxe, so it's not an issue on that guitar, but on my Mex Standard I have fitted a Tusq XL nut, and it has made my tuning much more stable and less likely to drift.

Then you need to look at the bridge setup, and make sure that the bridge plate returns to its proper rest position after use.

After that you need to look at the way you restring your guitar.
Loads of wraps around the tuning post is not the way to go - there's just too much string spare that can shift with tremolo use, and if you don't use a tremolo there's still too much spare string to stretch on bends.
You can create a string lock by wrapping the string under and over when you restring.

To me the Pings feel better, and work very well. I have never had any trouble with Pings over the last 25+ years. Modern Grovers are good also on a 3-a-side peghead. They just don't have the same feel on a Strat peghead IMO.

What is it your trying to accomplish.

Thanks for the replies guys! I've heard people say that the "locking wrap" is good and I've heard people say it's bad. I might have to give it a go and see how it changes the way my guitar behaves.

As for the grovers: It's a really long, stupid story involving a guitar shop lying about truss rod nuts and a replacement neck purchased on Ebay ha ha, but the grovers are purely aesthetic. I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't be accidentally downgrading. Although, it doesn't really matter now, because I purchased a better trem block and the holes didn't match the black plate I bought back when I purchased the grovers. Black tusq nut, black tusq saddles, black tusq string trees, black scratch guard, black knobs and tip, black pup covers...chrome tuners and bridge plate ha ha.
