Hey guys, I been playing guitar for as long as i remember, my father was a 70's and 80s rocker that always played by heart. For in today rockers, we tend to forget our old rock roots of Johnny B good, and classic rock n' roll like that. I looked and learned all the chords and styles of there playing, the only issue is, getting that sound! i play a lot of metal, and even dub-step guitar working and im looking for that old, classic sound. i have a AVT50h amp head and cabinet, Boss Me-50 muli petal. if you got an idea how i can ahev this sound of the old days I would love to hear it thanks :)

Get one of these and throw the ME50 away http://www.fender.com/series/hot-rod/bl ... 20v-black/
It's an old style amp with a touch of a modern twist - just keep the preamp gain down and the master volume up.

Don't overlook the amp's EQ... It may be simple... but It's effective.
Want that "Old School" sound... push your mids a bit... pump some bass end in there... and roll off your highs a little.
ie; treble - 5ish... middle 71/2ish... bass 7ish... works great for buckers as well as single coils.

And yes...
don't go nuts with the amp gain... too much gain sounds mushy and in-articulate. You want to hear some clarity between the notes in chords etc..
For solos... any basic overdrive is cool.. Tube Screamer.. MXR Classic OD... Blues Driver or something.
For amplifiers Any decent tube amp will get you there... Fender Deluxe Reverb...Fender Vibrolux Reverb... Vox AC30... Peavey Classic 50... etc...
if you dig SS... get a Mustang III or IV... they kick $@!... lots of sounds in those... and they respond and perform like a tube amp.

With tube amps all they had were 5 watt amps some 10-12 watt amps also. No OD pedals they just turned up the volume. A lot has to do with the Amp's speaker and the recording equipment they had available. Hi-Fi was not around then, neither was Stereo. Just two knobs - Volume and Tone mostly.

You can get "That" tone with stuff today you just have to play with your settings. A set of P-90 pickups would be close to what they actually had available for that tone also. A single coil neck pickup with the tone selected from 5 on down to 0 should be explored.

I use my Hollowbody with my Fender Pro Jr. or my VOX VT30 to get close.

For the classic bebop sound, get thicker strings with a wound G string.

I love my ME-50 and can get a lot of sounds/tone from it using a large variety of amps. One just has to play with the settings on the BOSS. I really like the Delay on it and use the RAT distortion setting quite a bit. Right now I have it plugged into a VOX AC30 but often use a Fender Bassman Ten or Fender Super Champ. All nice sounding amps. Speaking of which the Fender Super Champ has some nice built in tones with the use of tube and digital combined. IMHO.
