About 2 or 3 times a week someone gets online and asks, "Is my __________ real or fake?" after they purchased the instrument.

In the age of smart phones, please, pretty please, educate yourself. If you don't have a smart phone take some cell phone picks, put some money down so it doesn't disappear, and get on the internet.

There are far too many copies out there in the used market and I'm tired of people getting robbed. I don't mind copies, I mind lying sellers. One of my favorite Teles is a copy I built from parts. As many people know, Slash used a Les Paul copy back in the day.

Some of the best Les Pauls ever made were fakes. The infamous Ibanez "Law-Suit" Les Pauls from the late 70's were better than the Gibsons of the day by almost everyone's account who ever tried one. I did not. There once was a time when you would see them pop up occasionally on eBay but no longer. People know their true value now is in their playability and they're worth more to keep than to sell.

@ Paris...

Sage advice as always.

But given the number of Fender Stratocasters that change hands daily Worldwide, I think the relative few verification threads we see are really insignificant.

I suspect the majority of the Buyers out there are performing their due diligence.

But, no matter how sound the advice, or how frequently it may be given, there will always be those who 'Leap before they Look'...

cheers!

Yes, those old Ibanez Les Paul copies were very nice. I wish I had bought and kept a few (dozen) of them.

The memory of them was why I hunted down some Orville by Gibson (made in Japan) back in the late 90s.

It is quite amusing reading those "I just bought ___, is it real?" posts.

Close the fence gate after the animals have all ran off.

Exactly. If you already bought it then why would you even want to know? No good can come from it. Either it's good and there is no change in your status or it's bad and you got hosed. There's no improving anything by learning after the fact. The deal is done.

Is it only me or does anyone else feel that... sometimes... these posts are actually by the one's who are trying to "Perfect" their skill at making fake Strats, Tele's etc?...

Come out here acting like a victim... post pics.. get input... and start building away with all the awesome info folks just gave them about how they were able to spot that the guitar they posted pics of was indeed... a fake

Anyone can find hundreds of thousands, if not millions of decent quality pictures of the Fender guitars that are being badly copied with these fakes, so what little input that comes from here is unlikely to have any impact on the forger's activities.

The forgers prey on the gullible, who in turn think they may be getting the bargain of the century because that's what they want to believe.

If folks weren't so gullible the forgers wouldn't bother.
The forgers work on the basis that a fool and his money are easily parted.

From the number of "just bought this..." posts here it seems there are lots of folk easily parted from their hard earned.
They should learn to look after what they've worked for, and they haven't learned how to use the wealth of information available freely on the internet.
To me it looks to be a foolish predictament to be in.

Also, if the guitar plays well and sounds great, then why is a person concerned? Is the guitar suddenly bad? The power of a logo.

While many of these Buyers seem to be easily taken in, I suspect that there is also a number who are simply Greedy, seeking something of value for next to nothing. Some may actually think they're putting one over on an innocent, uninformed Seller.

I have to say, I feel much less sympathy for these people when they get burned!

cheers!

Amen, Brother!
I too have little sympathy for those trying to "get one over" on some poor unsuspecting seller

SO here is an example of what I would consider a very poor copy.

http://baltimore.craigslist.org/msg/4726746574.html

The Logo isn't correct and the body contours are a bit off. The neck and tuning keys seem wrong, too.

Anything else that stands out?

Well, it's certainly not any kind of 1962 Reissue, but it could be a Japanese Strat.

The pickguard is the 50s style 8 screw.

Well I just tried the link and got this:
This posting has been deleted by its author.
(The title on the listings page will be removed in just a few minutes.)

Maybe the seller figured out that they had been caught
