Thinking about buying an American Select Strat 2013, but was wondering beyond the new channeled fret board what significant differences there are between an American Deluxe vs American Select or is it just cosmetics?

Second question: Has anyone played the new channeled fret board and your opinions on it as to ease of play?

chuck
I have both.
the Select looks better than the am deluxe in my opinion because of the the flame maple top. but that's my style.
the select plays very well but not that much better than the deluxe (I've had three deluxes)
the select sounds great but again not that much better than the deluxe.

note:pickguard has been changed to pearloid and pups are changed as well
all to my tastes
dimarzio area pups in neck and middle and Tom Anderson in bridge
hope that helps

Yep I agree they are quite similar with the select having just a few refinements.
The select has nice wood but does not have the S1 or generally the N3 pickups
The neck on the channel bound version is great and many of the older type have a beautiful birdseye neck.
kd5qld that neck on yours looks more like a deluxe neck with lsr on a select body would that be correct? :D

I purchased that one from him recently.
incredible deal.
not sure what that select neck is probably on the am delx body

I have both also, I had my deluxe first, loved it then and love it now. When I played my select for the first time, the first strum sent a chill down my back, I was sold! I love it's sound, it is diffrent from my other guitars. My select is a 2012, so it does not have a channel bound neck.

Some of the Selects have upgraded electronics, and most come with "value added" features like locking tuners, straplocks and compound radius necks. So no, it's not just eye candy.

It will be interesting to see how they age. My Select Tele is made with a Malaysian Blackwood top, which is an ebony type that is supposed to darken with age. If I live, I'll find out, I guess :)

So, When you refer to upgraded electronics...is that better than the S1 switching. I believe this is a first year edition for Schaller locking tuners, they don't have the Fender 'F" on the back and are consistent with that years production. Although it is not a select the wood grain and finish is premium and to me rivals the select brand. So for $600 bucks I think I got a very high quality Guitar with some real mojo. It may not have the 50th Ann badging, but it has the 50th Ann quality and a better looking perloid pick guard with real abalone inlays on the fret board. To think the guy who turned down this guitar because of badging on the guitar and case.....man I feel like I made out like a bandit. As far as strap locks...2 5/8" rubber spacers work awesome and they blend in perfectly with my strap.....still longing for that flamed/quilt look though. I appreciate all the replies

Hi there Chuck S I think you may have skipped a bit..
Your last post suggests you have already picked up a guitar?
Was it a 2004 std, deluxe?
I also meant to add the odd select does has the S1 but it is not the norm.
How about some pics of your new strat?

Yes I did! But, I am looking to get a Select.....I see a few out there for the right price, but want to know if the new fret board and amenities justify the purchase compared to my 2004 American Deluxe....no I'm not trading it or giving up the 04....I like it. Two Strats are better than one :) It is just a matter of the old style or new and which is best...I know I know go play it right...well they don't have any for me to put in my hand or I would

Nice strat in Aged Cherry.
I had one of those and one in Tobacco with a maple board both just about everything you need in a guitar but some dont like the SCNs.
Maybe you should try something completey different for a second strat e.g a good second hand in the custom shop vintage range e.g. 56 blonde. The neck is of course completely different to the modern c.
You would have noticed the Select channel bound only seems to come in rosewood ( as far as I have seen) and seems to be limited to 21 frets not that that's a problem for me but could be for others
As I mentioned the 2012 HSS came with a heavy birdseye neck but most now have a fairly vanilla one
I posted pics of that strat somewhere... :D
