Hello, I am new to the group but long time Fender Stratocaster owner and player. I have two mid 80s Strats, and know a lot of the history of the Dan Smith and Corona Strats. They are my favorites by far.

I just picked up a very interesting 87 Dakota Red American Standard with Don Lace AGI pickups. Can anyone tell me about these? The guitar is a E4 and dated early 87. Everything looks American Standard but the Lace pickups. Deluxe?

Any information is appreciated. Thanks!!

Actodyne General manufactured a low-noise design of single-coil pickup known as Lace Sensors, Don Lace being the inventor. The Lace Sensor pickup had a rubberized particle magnet and used ferrous shielding to reduce hum. Being the best at the time, Fender installed Lace Sensors on the Strat Plus model for many years as a solution to the mains hum problem. However the Lace Sensor was a stopgap solution because the sound was not authentic Fender trademark sound. Fender purists wanted the genuine sound of the original Fender pickups with Alnico rod magnets and Fender eventually discontinued Lace Sensors as their mainstay solution to mains hum circa 1998. Lace Sensors continue to be used by many guitar players regardless."

Source unknown, but it answers your question.

Thanks for the information. This guitar that I have has ordinal branded Don Lace (not Fender) pickups with no plastic covers. Looking to find out if they are aftermarket or if this is a leftover from the CBS buy out.

Just guessing:
American Standard was introduced in 1986, LaceAGI's in 1985.
It's possible that your guitar has one of the first sets assembled to a Fender - done before the pup stamp was changed.
Tony Bacon's The Fender Book says the AmStd was offered as a Deluxe version with Lace Sensors "for a year or two".

Someone with more experience might recognize original vs. aftermarket wiring if you send pics. Anyway, you don't see "Don Lace" stamped pickups on a Strat often, so it's a rarity in both cases.

Hi there,
American Standards began (and went on) having American Std Pickups.
Strat Plus's began with 3 Gold Lace Sensors
Deluxe American Std' had 3 Gold Lace Sensors
Deluxe Strat Plu's had a Red Lace Sensor (Bridge) a Silver Lace Sensor (mid) and a Blue Lace Sensor (Neck)
and then there were others too----(Strat Ultra's, HM Strats, a couple of Signature models)

All the best,
rob

Hi Rob, thanks for the direct information. Is there any way these Don Lace branded pups could have come out of the factory, or do you think they are aftermarket? Serial is #E406263

Thanks again!!
Howard

Hi Howard,
Not sure if you have a Strat Plus or an American Std., the basic difference back then being the pickups and the nut, but it sounds like an 87 so it could very well be stock.
Cheers,
rob
