I thought this would be interesting for Strat Aficionados.

First of two created, signed by EC, the other sold at auction for $42K.

For sale on eBay :?: :?: :?: of all places.

Clapton Snow Leopard Strat listing

For that kind of money the seller should have taken more than one pic!

I've seen this guitar somewhere on the Christies catalogue.

From what I recall Fender did a couple of custom one-offs for old slowhand himself in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The Snow Leopard and Taos Turquoise EC Customs were among these.

Eric never brought those guitars onstage. Therefore he disallowed their release to the public since the two finishes are unauthorized.

Both guitars were made at the CS in 1989.

The way I see celebrity-owned guitars is that if they were any good, the celebrity would have kept them. So unless it was part of the estate, I wouldn't bother.

Intersting? Yep. Ugly finish on a nice guitar? Yep. Overpriced? Not to the one who bought it!

The back story:

Clapton was shown this guitar, #1 of 2, and wanted the neck modified (Imagine that!) and so #2 was created which he still owns. Clapton sold this one at the historic Christie's auction in 1999 to endow his Crossroads Centre.

From The Tuning Fork in Ontario Canada:

Eric Clapton's Guitar
You are looking at one of two Fender custom shop Strats that were made for Eric Clapton. They were called the Snow Leopard collection, and this is No #001 made in 1994. It sold at Christie's auction in 1999' for Erics charity foundation FOR $42,000. Eric owns No #002 and I also worked on this guitar in 1999', for the customer who bought it from Tundra Music, I had it in for a tune up just recently, as the owner was considering putting it up for sale, BIG BUCKS!
(see pics below)

From Christie's Auction House

Sale Information - Sale 9198 - Eric Clapton Guitars in aid of the Crossroads Centre - 24 June 1999 - New York, Rockefeller Plaza

A 1990s Fender Stratocaster Eric Clapton Signature Model
Serial No. SE92657, in custom gold sparkle finish with airbrush snow leopard and scenery, custom shop neckplate, maple neck with skunk-stripe routing, twenty-two fret fingerboard with dot inlays, three Fender Lace Sensor pickups, three rotary controls, selector switch, tremolo bridge/tailblock and white pickguard; and a tweed rectangular hardshell case with red plush lining and Lee Dickson's handwritten adhesive paper label Fender Strat. /?S.E.926567 'Snow Leopard' White & Gold E.C.Model

Lee Dickson recalls that Eric Clapton commissioned this guitar having been shown an identical example after a concert in the States. Clapton himself however had no recollection of this! Fender Strat/Gold Sparkle

Yes, I can see why he wanted the neck changed!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

He's not stupid. A one off Ferrari, let alone one owned by Eric Clapton, will never be worth a penny less than it cost.

Unless he wraps it round a tree.
