Hello folks, it's been way to long since I've been on the forums. Anyways, not really a true fender strat mod but a mod nonetheless. My nephew recently abandoned his squire mini strat I bought for him. Ive thought I could do some tinkering with it to get him back into playing.Such as the technical changes I am unsure of. Like I'm wanting to know if it's possible to use a standard guitar neck on these? Does this use a standard pickgaurd? And is it possible to use a stets bar tremolo (strat hardtail). Please let me know so I can make arrangements. If anybody else has some feedback too if you are a squire mini owner id like to hear anything at all. Thanks and all the best!!

Have you asked him why he stopped playing?
Are you sure that changing the look of the guitar would get him back into playing again? In that case it seems like it would be easier to buy a new guitar.

Or why not ask him if he wants to go to a concert.
Unless your nephew actially likes the tinkering part more than the playing part I believe that seeing a band on stage will be more inspiring than getting an upgraded guitar.

Or is this mainly about you wanting to have a guitar project?

Whatever the case may be I wish you the best of luck.

1. The Squier mini scale is 22.75", a standard Strat is 25.5". The distance from nut to bridge saddle must be according to the nominal scale. Thus, you should compensate that 2.75" scale change by moving the bridge to where the new neck dictates.
Plus, the neck joint (body/neck/both) has to be altered.
2. Mini is 3/4 size, so probably not - remember, all full size Strat pickguards don't fit all full size Strats, either...
Anyway, a Mini has 1vol&1tone vs Strat's 1vol&2tone pots.
3. This one: Stetsbar Hardtail Trem? Well, anything is possible. Don't expect a drop-in replacement

1,2,3: I'd say your idea would be a lot more difficult to pull through than building a new guitar. Plus, it will be more expensive. So:
If you need a life long hobby, go for it.
If you need a guitar, go buy another.

Thanks for the feedback guys. My thoughts were kind of correct. You see, my nephew is wanting a guitar similar to my american strat. He feels at 15 he's playing a toy with the mini. I actually like the mini as a practice guitar its really spot on. So, I was hoping you could change things to make it more interesting. So I'm going to put this idea to rest. Maybe for a graduation present I'll get him a mia strat like I did. Anyways, thanks!!!

You can get a nice second hand Squier Classic Vibe or a Fender MIM for very little cash right now, and sell it for the same amount when you invest in the MIA Strat. Just a thought...

+1

At 15 I too would have wanted a full size guitar to play with.
Lucky niece to have an uncle that cares so much about nourishing his passion for music.

Agree... a Classic Vibe would prob do the trick.
Suggestion... take HIM out to GC or something.... let HIM scope out all the awesome Squier models... all the cool colors etc...
Let HIM pick the one HE likes... Let him know that if he sticks with it... doesn't lose interest and wants to continue playing guitar... then it's time to go for a real deal grown up piggie 8)

Couldn't agree more...Nobody starts at the top...nor should they...

...alternatively peruse eBay...set a realistic dollar limit...then invite him to pick one out of of several you've decided were worth the money.

And jmattis is right, later you can probably get your money back on a resale...less the 14% eBay/Paypal charges...

...unless your nephew does the Townshend Kabong with it!

Thanks guys for the input!! Yeah I was really stoked when I first learned he was interested in guitar. You have to understand I am not from a musical family unfortunately. I alone play guitar, bass, piano and flute but no one else living cares about music. So this is my chance to pass my abilities down and its a special gift to give. I have taken him to gc and he can never make his mind up. But we both agree not a huge fan of the classic vibes for the sole reason the necks are gloss (sticky) not matte (smooth) though sound decent. So, possibly in between school and xbox he'll give me a call to jam haha!
