its a guitar belonging to my mate's friend, who's "on his way out" and is getting rid of his stuff. it was bought by his wife who had been told that it's one of the last models to come out of Fullerton factory, with custom pickups designed to give it an "accoustic" tone. I just plugged it in to a Calsbro Cobra 90 and it sounds fvckn awful. But i just want to know what are your opinions on this models, whats original and how does the wifie's story hold up here.

I'm not sure if i can open it up, to photo the guts.... too risky to ask....

At first, I just looked at the pics, and my impression was "Now there's a very nice Japanese Strat" (tuners say Fender Japan, and isn't that a System1 tremolo).

Then I read your descriptions; would that guitar fall into this category:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=50058

What is written in front of that serial#? Does it say anywhere it was MIA? Any marks, stamps, dates in the neck pocket?

I'm not in a position where i can just dismantle this guitar for a wee peek, it's not mine. there is no "made in Japan" or crafted in "Japan" anywhere on the headstock or heel. there appear to be TWO serials:
silver label - SERIAL NUMBER E 629601
black label (deliberately damaged) MoJ. 195 (maybe one digit missing at the end)
as if someone tried to hide its Japanese origin and make it look like it's an american model. the USA flag is evidently been added. it's one of those stickers you need to wet to peel off a film and stick onto something. i just scratched it gently and half of it is now on my fingernail

It's a 4-piece body, quite featureless, you can't really see the wood figure.... dont know what type it is...
the neck also looks like nothing i have seen before. Pine maybe? 12'' radius, with a flat neck shape, quite uncomfortable to play IMO

It should say "Made in Japan" underneath the "Stratocaster" on the headstock decal. The "Japan" part has been completely scratched off, along with a good portion of the "Made in" part - or maybe the entire "Made in Japan" was replaced by that other messed up lettering. I just can't tell from the photos if part of the original decal is still there or if it has all been removed and replaced. As you say the American flag sticker is just that - a sticker. In the very first photo of the headstock you can see where the finish was gouged out right where it should have said "Made in Japan".

This is very clearly a model that we've come to call the "Contemporary Standard 22" and it's clearly an MIJ model from circa 1985-1986 since it has the System 1 tremolo unit.

Some time in late 1986 or early 1987 these changed to a Kahler 2500 series "Traditional" tremolo (but retained the System 1 string lock) but that version also should say "Made in Japan" on the headstock decal. There was eventually a third version of this model (from 1988 until they were discontinued) that is discussed in the thread jmattis linked - those later ones have the Kahler Spyder trem and have no country of origin decal from the factory.

+1

Definitely a Contemporary standard 22 made in Japan. The body is probably basswood.
I own a similar one built in 1987 with the kahler 2500. I eventually changed the trem in favour of a 2 pivot fender strat trem, she is now in thebsame league of my 2012 MIA standard which is loaded with CS fat 50 pickips. I cannot say which one is better... my mij is a nice example and a very well built guitar.

nope, mine has an American flag which makes it "not Japanese"

although i have to say, instead of remains of "made in japan" words, there is "MoJ. 195... "
god knows what that is about...

Looking at it again tonight I think the entire original "Made in Japan" decal was completely removed and that "MoJ.195" (or whatever it is) was put in its place - which is really a bizarre thing. My best guess is that they were trying to cover any shadow remnants of the "Made in Japan" decal.
