I have been asking a few questions about my old guitar lately. I bought it new maybe 1983 in the UK. Couldn't afford a Stratocaster back then so got me the Squier. I left it with a friend for a long time and have recently rescued it and now learn / play everyday - catching up on lost time. I prefer it to my newer Telecaster for some reason.

I saw a similar one on ebay and it was pretty darned expensive. His was 1983 and his serial started JV50***. Mine starts JV16*** so I guess mine must be a tad older. I don't want to pull the neck off for no reason but I guess the actual date is written under there.

It has a slight buzz on the E string, especially past the 12th fret and so have been reading up / gathering info on how to tackle it. Raise the #6 E bridge slightly etc. Maybe the truss bar needs a tweak - though not sure how to get the bit of wood that covers it out without damaging it. But then, the other strings are fine. Just the E, and the A if I really hit it hard.

Someone told me I should replace the switch and tone switches etc. but I'd like to keep it original if possible.

That's a JV '57 reissue Stratocaster. Do not pull any plugs to adjust the truss rod

Get to know the beast, here's a couple links to ponder:
http://www.21frets.com/squier_jv/jvstratocaster.htm
http://planetbotch.blogspot.fi/2012/08/ ... issue.html

My suggestion would be to have the guitar checked and setup by a pro, at least once, since you have that buzz issue, and I read you're not familiar with setting up these vintage models. Find a luthier who let's you follow the procedure, you'll learn a lot. Maybe also take pics while the neck/pickguard are off.

Oh, by the way: most of the time on the forum we see Squiers where someone replaced the decal for Fender. Yours is in fact the opposite; in all aspects that's a Fender with a factory fitted Squier decal.

Whatever you do, do not replace anything, especially if it is in working order. These in original shape are quite valuable and collectible. Very nice specimen you have there.

Yes bring it to a pro for the set up. FYI I believe that model has the truss adjustment on the heal of the neck and the neck need to be removed in-order to get to the adjustment screw

Hi there,
It looks a nice example and it deserves nicer pictures to be posted!
For sure someone else will confirm or give more accurate information, if I remember correctly your serial JV16xxxx shoul point around September 1982. The confirmation would be on the neck heel where the pencil marking is placed.
Your guitar body looks like either alder or basswood so it's period correct.
At that period, August-October, they run out of USA made pickups so the low-end Squier Strats were fitted with Japanese made alnico pickups instead, called sq-5 (reported to be very nice sounding). Your guitar might be in this league. Higher ends fitted with either grey, red or black bobbin USA pup.
At that time the so called domestic range was not started yet, so your guitar is probably an export model, more sought after.

How does it feel and sound?
Alberto

I had one of those. Great guitar. It is indeed an export model, 2nd generation headstock decal. The 1st generation decals were only used for the first few months of the Squier JV. You took great care of yours! 8)

I eventually parted with the guitar as the neck was extremely thin for my liking (thinner than any strat I've come across).

I have a 2003 Telecaster too but haven't touched it since I got this back three months ago. I really like it. I bought this guitar myself about 1983 and nothing has ever been done to it except new strings. I lost the whammy bar - but it is probably knocking around my mother's house someplace back in the UK. I left it with a friend for umpteen years as I travelled around the world working etc. It is as I left it, except for a few minor scratches and knocks - he is a guitar player too but has several others so mine did not get much attention. With my Mustang 1 Amp it sounds really good. It is also very light and comfortable to hold sitting down, unlike the Telecaster - which is heavier and digs into my ribs (in earlier Japan this year I saw a new Telecaster with it's body contoured like a Strat). I have been re-learning everything I have forgotten and then some - YouTube and the internet are great in this respect.

For now then, I shall leave it as it is. I can put up with a bit of buzz for the time being until I find a pro to set it up right. I am a bit of a hobby engineer though (cars / bikes / boats) so I doubt it would be too daunting. Have done a fair bit of research into it already.

At the end of the day, I just want to play it. Currently at least 2 hours a day in the evenings, and a lot more at weekends. I have a lot of lost time to catch up on.

Video of the guitar - not very good quality though - I bought this camera about 2004. And excuse my lack of talent. Have only been back at it since April.
