Hello there,

I got my MIM strat a couple of months ago, and been playing it very regularly ever since.

Just snapped my high E string, which is unfortunately the only string that I didn't have a replacement for :| I have a new set of elixir nanowebs (never tried em) on the way but they will take a while to get here...

I heard horror stories about leaving the rest of the strings on and necks breaking due to an imbalance of tension, so I loosened them all down till there was basically no tension left. But now I keep seeing things that say that that's bad for the truss rod? FYI I hang by guitar up on a wall mount.

Was wondering what the best thing to do in this situation is and hopefully establish a precedent for me :)

Thanks!

Don't worry about it the loss of a high E string will make no difference to the tension in the neck and your guitar is in no danger.

Keith Richards happly plays vintage telecasters without the low E string and I seem to remember that a guy from Sepultura only used the EAD and G srings and left off the B and the E.

If you wanted to keep playing unitl your elixers arrive and had a spare B string you could use that as an e string.

Assuming you use 9s your b would be an 11, which many people are happy to use as an e, it will just make bending that string more difficult.

a 13 from a set of 10s would also work but may be a bit too big for your nut.

You're more likely to damage the neck by leaving it unstrung. It's not unknown for the truss rod to pull the neck backwards into a "back bow" which can create all kinds of playing problems. As mentioned above, the difference in tension on a neck missing the high E won't cause any problems.
