Well I've decided American Standard was a little too high quality for me, so instead I will Save up for Mexican Strat In a few years sell it buy a hwy1 then sell that in a few years and buy deluxe. Back to the Present: Are the Mex PUPs comparable to Americans or hwy1s? are you guys happy with yours? Online these come in a couple colors are they available in more colors at actual stores? I've heard Mexican Standards have poor quality control, are these problems fixable?

Thx in Advance,
Invincible

I don't think the pickups in the MiM are as good as those in the HWY 1 (which are Alcino III's) or the Standard.

The problem is easily addressed, though. Fender offers a wide variety of vintage and hot pickups that can be dropped into you MiM strat with little fuss or mess. (I like my '69's, but they also make blues variety pickups, and even an Yngwie Malmsteen set which I hear smoke pretty well...)

My personal opinion: If you're just planning on selling it later just leave it stock. It will probably work for what you have planned.

Are the PUPs the only downside to the Mex Standard? If I put in nicer PUPs would it be equivaalent to the hwy 1? Also when i say a few years I mean like 10 years. Finally, Do the mexican standards have a resale value like other Strats?

Thx guys,
Invincible

Well, to be honest there are some variations of the HWY 1 model. The one I purchased had a slightly wider neck than the other models I tried out.

But, 6 one half...I don't even know if 2 strats sound exactly alike. Even if they're from the same line.

As for the MiM models...a lot of people swear by those, and we're not necessarily talking about beginners, but people who have been playing (and sometimes collecting) guitars for many years. If you ask me, the one thing the MiM strats don't have that the Hwy 1's do that isn't easily upgradeable are those jumbo frets on the neck. The bridge is also slightly different.

You might be asking the wrong guy about horse trading guitars....I'll admit this (guitars usually go to my place to grow old and eventually die...hahah.)

The MiM's are the standards for a lot of intensive purposes. I don't know too many people who have lost money on them. (Ebay prices for used models are often right there with the newer ones.) In addition....as far as better pickups:

There are so many people that immediately opt to slap in Seymour Duncans or other aftermarket pickups that you can typically find a killer deal on genuine Fender pups on the open market. Often times at ridiculously low prices.

(Me? I'd definitely go for that MiM and just keep it forever, and then just buy another one in 10 years that's a bit different or pay to have it refretted after you've worked those suckers down to the fingerboard. That guitar won't let you down...)

Hello Invincible1214

MIM standard strats represent a
good value in the fender lineup,
Great for hotrodding.

Don't get hung up on resell value,
it'll be a long time before you come
out ahead, dollar wise.

I get a used one from time to time
I usually only buy bone stock and keep it
that way, so for me the pickups
fine for what they are.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Hey, they even use an alico 3 in the neck position on the EJ. wound differently but it's still an alnico 3.

So maybe keep MIM for along time, and upgrade it, seems like a good idea.

i have 3 highway ones upgrade 1 2006 2 2007's
all three have the alnico 3's. i find the alnico 3's
much better than the custom shop 69's.
with the alnico 3's i can do a lot more with tone.
than i could with the custom shop pick ups.
and also the alnico 3's responed a lot better to distortion.

The MIM strats dont get the credit they deserve and I'm talking the whole guitar, wood, pups, hardware and all.

Just try and buy a better guitar for under $400.00 street price, ya cant !!!

I have owned a few that were every bit as sweet to play and to hear as any thing on the market and it simply blows away the other stuff out there at that price range.

think about it, you can get a Strat and a Tele for the price of one Hwy-1 or an SSS and an SSH Strat and they will play, Look and sound terrific!!!

Hi. I had a Mexican for about 13 years. I loved it. But last Feb. I decided that I would like to see if a new American Standard might be the thing for me. I took a ride to my fav guitar store, tried out a black American Standard with a maple neck. As soon as I bent my first note I was hooked. Some very clear differences in feel, and of course the pickups were noticeably superior.

This is not to say that a Mexican is not a quality instrument. It is. It's all Fender. Best guitar out there for the money. Like I said, I had one for 13 years and it's where I first started when I couldn't afford a more upscale Fender Strat. So go for it, save your pennies and when the time comes, try other Srats if you can afford them.

PS I play classic rock, blues, & funk. Fender rocks!

exactly, but ya gotta compare apple to apple here.

My everyday axe is a AMSE 50th ann. limited edition Strat and I plug into a U.S.A. made blues deville 4x10.

glad as I can be that Fender still makes its top stuff here in the good old U.S., however if you compare other guitar makers offerings in that price range, Fender MIM kills em Dead !!!
